What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that inflames and narrows the airways. It can manifest as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. Asthma can first appear at any age, but it is most common to see signs in childhood. Additionally, because the airways are inflamed, they are often very sensitive and can react strongly to certain inhaled substances.

Because of the strong reaction to inhaled substances, one of the most common methods of control is avoiding known triggers of a reaction. If an asthma attack is triggered, it can often be quelled with an asthma inhaler, most commonly a corticosteroid.

Ongoing Drug Therapy

For those with more severe asthma, treating only the attacks is not an option. Instead, long-term medications must be taken to both reduce the likelihood of an asthma attack and to prevent exacerbation of the disease. In addition to long-term asthma medication, an asthma inhaler should also be used in the event of an asthma attack.

What are the different types of Asthma Medications?

Overall, asthma medications can be broken down into long-term medication or short-acting medications. Long-term medications allow asthma sufferers to control the chronic symptoms of asthma and prevent escalation of the disease. They include inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists. Often, your doctor will prescribe an asthma inhaler that includes both long-term and short-acting drug types. These are used solely to control or prevent an asthma attack. They are taken as needed, and generally consist of either a short-acting beta agonist or an oral or intravenous corticosteroid.

Inhaled Corticosteroids

Including Fluticasone (Flovent Diskus®), Budesonide (Pulmicort®), Mometasone (Asmanex® Twisthaler®), Beclomethasone (Qvar®), and Ciclesonide (Alvesco®), these anti-inflammatory drugs are most often used for long-term control of asthma. They tend to have few side effects, though they often take several days to weeks to achieve their full benefit. In young children, they have been known to slow growth.

Leukotriene Modifiers

Including Montelukast (Singulair®), Zafirlukast (Accolate®), and Zileuton (Zyflo®). Leukotrienes are chemicals within the immune system that cause asthma symptoms. Leukotriene modifiers are asthma medications that block their effects, inducing asthma relief for up to 24 hours.

Long Acting Beta Agonists (LABAs)

Including Salmeterol (Serevent®) and Formoterol (Foradil® Perforomist®), LABAs act to open up narrowed airways and reduce swelling. They are used in cases of moderate or severe asthma, and the effects can last up to 12 hours, making them ideal for managing nighttime symptoms. They are used in conjunction with inhaled corticosteroids.

Asthma symptoms are related to difficulty breathing because of inflamed airways and include wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, and shortness of breath. They can also produce an increased sensitivity to inhaled substances and allergens.
