Methylprednisolone Information:

What is methylprednisolone?

Methylprednisolone (or the brand name, Medrol) is a corticosteroid known as a glucocorticoid, i.e., a natural or synthetic adrenocortical steroid that is easily absorbed in the intestines. This medication is used to supplement natural glucocorticoids when the body doesn't produce enough, aiding in the suppression of substances that cause inflammation. Methylprednisolone uses include the treatment of endocrine disorders, psoriasis, arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune conditions that cause inflammation in the body.

How do I take methylprednisolone?

This medication may be administered intramuscularly or intraarticularly. In these cases, keep all appointments for receiving your medication. Otherwise, your doctor will determine your dose by your age, medical history, and treatment needs. This may require 1 pill in high doses daily, or 1 pill multiple times daily. Many times, only 1 methylprednisolone pill 1 time daily is required. Always follow your doctor's instructions closely.

You may want to take this medication with milk or food in order to avoid upset stomach. Follow any dietary instructions your doctor gives you, such as a high-protein, low-sodium, or potassium-rich diet.

Before taking methylprednisolone, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have recently had any infections, especially any fungal or parasitic infections.
  • You have a weak or compromised immune system or you have a severe injury.
  • You have any other diseases or disorders, as this medication can interact with them and possibly make them worse.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medicines, drugs, supplements or vitamins, especially NSAIDs, immunosuppressive drugs, diabetes medications, antifungals, anti-seizure or anticonvulsive drugs, tuberculosis treatments, other steroids, or HIV/AIDS treatments; many other drugs can interact with steroid-based medications.
  • You have recently received a vaccine or plan to get a vaccine.
  • You are living with someone who has an infection.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
  • You have or have a history of thyroid, liver, kidney, or heart disease or disorder.
  • You have had tuberculosis.

  • You have any gastrointestinal problems (e.g., ulcers, diverticulitis).
  • You have myasthenia gravis or another muscle disorder.
  • You are epileptic or another disorder with seizure.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You take aspirin at high doses, or you need to take aspirin daily.
  • You have eye problems (e.g., glaucoma).

Common methylprednisolone side effects are: mild discomfort or bloating, mild muscle pain or weakness, some stomach discomfort, headache.

What if I forget to take a dose of methylprednisolone?

Refer to your doctor, as there may be special instructions you need to follow. You should ask your doctor when they prescribe you this medication, and save the instructions.

In some cases, you may take the missed dose when you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Never take extra methylprednisolone or a double dose to make up for missing one.

What happens if I overdose on methylprednisolone?

If the person taking methylprednisolone is collapsed unconscious, or is not breathing, call 9-1-1.

Warnings

Steroid medications like methylprednisolone may weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness, exacerbating current infections, or reactivating recent infections. You should not take this medication if you have any fungal infection.

Avoid people who are ill, especially if they have chicken pox or measles. Do not receive vaccines while on this medication, especially "live" vaccines, as they will be less effective and may cause you to become ill.

Be careful if this medication is prescribed to children, as it may affect their growth. Notify your doctor as soon as possible if you think your child is not growing at an appropriate rate while on methylprednisolone.

Avoid grapefruit, grapefruit juice, or other grapefruit products, as it can interact with this medication.

Do not suddenly stop taking methylprednisolone, even if you feel well, as it will cause unwanted withdrawal symptoms. Any medical personnel that treat you need to know you're taking this medication, so be sure to get a medical alert tag or card.
