What is Zyflo?
Zyflo is different from most other asthma medications because it comes in the form of a pill and it works by inhibiting leukotrienes. Leukotrienes play several roles in the body’s immune response and their release is usually followed by the release of histamine and prostaglandins. All of these substances cause inflammation. Leukotrienes also cause contractions in bronchial smooth muscle tissue. By blocking the effects of leukotrienes, Zyflo is able to relieve many asthma symptoms.
How do I take Zyflo?
This medication is usually prescribed to be taken in 600 mg doses four times a day. This medication may be taken with or without food. Try to take your pills at the same times every day at regularly spaced intervals. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Zyflo, tell your doctor if:
- You have or have ever had liver disease.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, including vitamins or supplements.
- You have ever had any mental health problems.
What are the possible side effects of taking Zyflo?
Possible Zyflo drug side effects include diarrhea, muscle pain, headache, nose and throat pain or irritation, sinusitis. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious but rare side effects that should be addressed immediately include: upper respiratory infection or flu-like symptoms, fatigue, severe nausea, yellowing skin or eyes, abdominal pain, itching, trouble sleeping and negative mental or mood changes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Zyflo?
If you forget to take a dose of Zyflo, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take two consecutive doses of Zyflo.
How do I store Zyflo?
Store Zyflo tightly closed in its container at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Zyflo?
There is limited information available on Zyflo drug overdose. No lethal overdose in humans has been reported. If someone has overdosed on Zyflo, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Zyflo should not be used to stop an asthma attack once it has started. Be sure to carry another emergency asthma medication in case of an attack. Be careful when drinking alcohol with this medication as it can be hard on the liver. Ask your doctor about how much you can safely drink and follow his or her instructions.
