Natural Nausea Treatments

One commonly known home nausea treatment is ginger ale. To get the best effect from ginger ale, look for a non-standard ginger ale that actually has a good amount of ginger in it such as Reed’s Ginger Brew. These varieties can be found at your local health food store. Another option is to make your own ginger tea with peeled ginger root, honey, and lemon, but the carbonation in ginger ale is also soothing for some. Peppermint tea and any food or drink containing peppermint can soothe nausea as well. Peppermint oil and lavender oil may work as aromatherapies to control nausea. These remedies are great options if your nausea is the result of pregnancy.

Antihistamines

Believe it or not, antihistamines are used to control nausea. Antihistamines are usually used for allergies because they block histamine which causes inflammation and other symptoms of allergic reaction. Blocking histamine, particularly H1, is thought to dull the sensation of equilibrium in the inner ear, which makes certain antihistamines particularly effective for treating motion sickness. Some antihistamines also serve as anticholinergics and block acetylcholine transmission.

Serotonin antagonists

Serotonin antagonists, specifically antagonists of the 5-HT3 receptors, are especially effective in controlling nausea from chemotherapy. By stopping the binding of serotonin to these receptors in the central nervous system, these medications are able to suppress the nauseous feeling caused by certain other medications or treatments.

Anticholinergics

Anticholinergic medications block the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which affects the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system controls the involuntary movement of smooth muscle tissue in the gastrointestinal tract and more. By blocking these nerve impulses, anticholinergics are able to control nausea. Some antihistamines are also anticholinergics.

Symptoms of nausea include a queasy feeling in the stomach that produces an urge to vomit. Vomiting may or may not ensue. Nausea may also cause sensitivity to certain smells and foods. Nausea itself is a symptom or indication that the body is either ill or responding to some sort of stimuli such as medication, movement, or pregnancy.
