Sancuso Information:

What is Sancuso?

Sancuso (granisetron) is a type of drug known as a serotonin antagonist. It blocks the action of serotonin, a brain chemical that can trigger nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy. The medicine slowly dissolves and is absorbed through an adhesive patch before, during, and after chemotherapy treatment.

How do I take Sancuso?

Read the instructions on the Sancuso packaging and follow your doctor’s instructions for using this medication. Patients usually apply a patch to the skin of their upper arm 24 to 48 hours before their scheduled chemotherapy treatment and continue wearing the patch until at least 24 hours after treatment ends. It is fine to shower and bathe with the patch on. If the adhesive on the patch isn’t sticking to your arm, carefully wrap medical tape or surgical bandages around the edges of the patch. Do not cover the patch completely.

Before taking Sancuso, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to granisetron or have had an allergic reaction to any type of transdermal medicine
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements, especially drugs that increase serotonin
  • You have a history of stomach or intestinal problems
  • You have recently had stomach or intestinal surgery
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Sancuso?

The most commonly reported side effects of the Sancuso drug are headaches, constipation, and mild skin irritation at the application site. These side effects should not require medical attention unless they become severe. In very rare cases, Sancuso can cause serotonin syndrome, a condition that may lead to severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, a fast heartbeat, coordination problems, agitation, hallucinations, and fainting. Remove the patch and call your doctor immediately if you have any of these warning signs, or if you have stomach pain or swelling, or severe irritation at the application site.

What if I forget a dose of Sancuso?

If you do not apply a Sancuso patch at least 24 hours before your scheduled chemotherapy appointment, tell your doctor, as your treatment may need to be rescheduled.

How do I store Sancuso?

Once you are done with a patch, gently pull it off and fold it in half so that the sticky sides are touching. Throw it away somewhere that children and pets cannot reach it.

What happens if I overdose on Sancuso?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on the Sancuso drug when using one patch at a time as prescribed, but this medication can be harmful if you use more than has been prescribed, or if you chew or swallow a patch. If you or someone in your household is experiencing overdose symptoms, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Warnings

Do not apply a Sancuso patch to an area of skin that is irritated or where you have recently applied skin products. Don’t wear a patch for more than 7 days in a row, and don’t reuse an old patch. Keep the patch covered when you need to be in direct sunlight, and keep the application site covered whenever you are outside for at least 10 days after removing the patch. If you need to have an MRI test while you are using Sancuso, ask your doctor whether you should remove the patch.
