What is Zuplenz?

Zuplenz is the drug ondansetron, a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that is prescribed to prevent the nausea and vomiting that may accompany chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or cancer surgery. Zuplenz works by blocking serotonin, a natural substance in the body that can cause nausea and vomiting. It is not prescribed to treat nausea and vomiting that is caused by other conditions.

How do I take Zuplenz?

Zuplenz is a soluble film strip that is taken orally, with or without food. The first dose is usually taken before the surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy at a time indicated by your doctor. Additional doses are taken one to three times a day during radiation treatment or chemotherapy and for one to two days after. Use dry hands to peel back the packaging, place the Zuplenz strip on your tongue, and allow it to dissolve; do not swallow the strip. As the strip dissolves, swallow the released medication several times; water may be used to help it dissolve. Wash your hands after taking Zuplenz.

Before taking Zuplenz, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ondansetron or any of the ingredients in Zuplenz
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking medications for seizures, arrhythmia, mental illness, or migraines You are taking MAOIs, or SSRIs
  • You are taking apomorphine, tramadol, clarithromycin, erythromycin, fentanyl, lithium, mirtazapine, methylene blue, or moxifloxacin
  • You have PKU phenylketonuria, arrhythmia, tachycardia, bradycardia, hypertension, heart failure, liver disease, low magnesium or potassium levels; or
  • You, or someone in your family, have long QT syndrome

What are the possible side effects of taking Zuplenz?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Zuplenz. Less severe symptoms include headache, weakness, fatigue, chills, or feeling drowsy. Contact your doctor if these conditions persist or worsen.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), agitation, blurred vision, chest pain, fainting, coma, disorientation, dizziness, excessive sweating, tachycardia, arrhythmia, fever, visual or aural hallucinations, hoarseness, loss of coordination, nausea, seizures, vomiting, twitching or stiff muscles, swelling of the extremities, and diarrhea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zuplenz?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Zuplenz, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Zuplenz?

Keep Zuplenz tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a film strip from its packaging until ready to use it. Dispose of any unused strips according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Zuplenz?

If an overdose of Zuplenz is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include constipation, dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness, arrhythmia, or sudden, short-term vision loss.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Zuplenz. This medication may make you drowsy, dizzy, or induce hallucinations; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Zuplenz will not prevent nausea and vomiting caused by conditions other than cancer treatments or surgery.

 

Brand Names

Zuplenz is the brand name of the drug ondansetron in a soluble film. Ondansetron is also marketed as Zofran and Zofran ODT, but the formulation, purpose, and method of administration are all different and must not be substituted for one another without a doctor’s written permission.
