Silver Nitrate Information:
What is silver nitrate?
Silver nitrate is a corrosive and a cauterization agent used to remove unwanted tissue such as warts, verruca, podiatric warts and growths, umbilical stumps, stoma, skin tags, and over-granulation found on wounds. For some conditions, such as aphthous stomatitis (canker sores), it may provide pain relief as well. It is available by prescription only as a single use stick or a multi-use “pencil.” When the tip of one of these applicators is moistened with water or other liquids (including mucus), the combination creates nitric acid and biologic cauterization takes place when it contacts the skin.
How do I take silver nitrate?
The silver nitrate medicine is a prescription only drug, available in pencil or stick form, the tip of which is moistened and applied directly to the wart or the verruca on a once daily basis. Protect the surrounding areas of healthy skin using petroleum jelly or other impenetrable barrier. Moisten the tip of the stick with clean distilled water then hold it in gentle contact with the wart or verruca for one or two minutes. Allow the affected area to dry and scrape away any granulation. A wart should receive no more than three applications and verruca no more than six. When treating aphthous stomatitis, the application is performed by a healthcare professional.
Before taking silver nitrate, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to silver nitrate or any of the ingredients in the applicator
- You are taking any medications
- You are using topical dressings, creams, or ointments
What are the possible side effects of taking silver nitrate?
Those using this medication have reported a few side effects, the less severe of which include burning or cauterization of healthy skin and Argyra, a permanent discoloration of the skin.
Severe side effects from silver nitrate that require immediate medical attention include Acquired methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder. Silver nitrate can also cause irreparable damage if it contacts the eyes (including blindness) or mucus membranes.
What if I forget to take a dose of silver nitrate?
Because silver nitrate is applied on as needed basis, missing a dose is not an issue. However, once the wart, verruca, skin tag, or targeted item has been removed, it should be discontinued. Use should be limited to no more than three applications for warts and six for verruca.
How do I store silver nitrate?
Keep the silver nitrate medicine tightly sealed in its original container and out of the reach of children. Keep this product away from extremes of heat and humidity and away from organic compounds. Silver nitrate applicators are classified as hazardous waste and used or expired applicators must be disposed of in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
What happens if I overdose on silver nitrate?
Because there is no defined maximum dosage, the risk of an overdose is highly unlikely. If the silver nitrate is ingested, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and Emergency Services at 911. If this product contacts the eyes, mucus membranes, or healthy skin, flush the affected area with copious amounts of water and contact Emergency Services.
