Santyl Information:
What is Santyl?
Santyl contains collagenase, an enzyme that helps to break down and remove dead skin and tissue. When applied to a burn or skin ulcer, it helps to clean the wound and allows new tissue to form, resulting in a faster healing process. It currently only comes in 15g and 30g tubes of ointment.
How do I use Santyl?
Santyl is usually applied to the wound site once a day, although your doctor may put you on a different application schedule. Before applying, wash your hands, remove any dressing, and clean the wound site as your doctor has directed. Use a gauze pad or wooden applicator to spread the Santyl ointment over the wound site, at approximately the thickness of a nickel. After applying, wrap the area in a bandage. If you have additional questions about how to apply this ointment, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Before using Santyl, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to collagenase or any of the other ingredients in this medication, or if you have any other allergies
- You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially topical products containing lead, iodine, silver, or mercury
What are the possible side effects of using Santyl?
As with many topical medications, Santyl may cause temporary skin irritation, especially if it gets on the skin surrounding the affected area. Some people have also reported a burning sensation at the affected area. If these or any other unusual side effects persist or worsen, talk to your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you notice symptoms of a serious infection, which may include a fast heartbeat, fever, weakness, warm skin, and hyperventilation.
What if I forget to take a dose of Santyl?
It is best to apply Santyl at the same time every day to help you remember; however, if you forget, simply apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for another application of this ointment, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal application schedule. Do not apply more Santyl than usual to catch up.
How do I store Santyl?
Store Santyl at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Do not keep it in the bathroom or freezer. If you no longer need the ointment or it has expired, contact your pharmacist to determine how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Santyl?
It is unlikely that you will overdose on Santyl when using it topically; however, it can be harmful if you or someone in your household swallows any of the ointment. If someone in your household has ingested any of this medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Apply Santyl only to the affected areas for which it is prescribed, and avoid getting the ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth.
