What is propranolol ER?

Propranolol ER is in a class of medications called beta blockers. It contains a nonselective, beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking agent that controls vasodilation and exerts an anesthetic-like effect that works on the cardiovascular system. Accordingly, the drug simultaneously treats the root of high blood pressure as well as the chest pain, or angina, associated with cardiovascular health conditions.

How do I take propranolol ER?

Adults taking propranolol ER may take it with or without food, but once a preferred method is established, patients should take it the same way each time. This medication is taken daily and should be consumed at the same time each day. Do not crush, chew, break, or open a capsule of medicine. It is intended to be swallowed whole.

Before taking propranolol ER, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a muscle disorder
  • You have bronchitis, emphysema, or other breathing disorders
  • You have low blood sugar or diabetes
  • You have had congestive heart failure
  • You have slow heartbeats
  • You have low blood pressure
  • You have liver or kidney disease
  • You suffer from depression
  • You have a thyroid disorder
  • You have pheochromocytoma
  • You have problems with circulation

Alert your doctor if you feel any severe side effects including slow or uneven heartbeat, lightheadedness, wheezing or trouble breathing, shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain, sudden weakness, vision problems, loss of coordination, chills in the hands and feet, depression, confusion, hallucinations, liver problems, low blood sugar, or severe skin reactions, especially with swelling, pain, blistering, and peeling.

What if I forget to take a dose of propranolol ER?

If you forget to take a dose of this medication, take the dose that you missed as soon as you remember to. If your next dose is less than 8 hours away, skip your missed dose. Never take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store propranolol ER?

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Throw away the unused portion of propranolol ER 2 months after you first open it.

What happens if I overdose on propranolol ER?

You may experience symptoms such as slow or uneven heartbeats, dizziness, weakness, or fainting. Get emergency medical help or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

If you have asthma, a consistently slow heartbeat, or any serious heart conditions such as AV block or sick sinus syndrome, you should not attempt to use this medication. Have you doctor check your blood pressure often while dosing. If you are due for surgery, let the surgeon know beforehand that you have been taking propranolol ER. Your surgeon may require you to stop using your medicine for a short period.
