Lopressor Information:

What is Lopressor?

Lopressor is in a drug category known as beta blockers. It works by slowing your heart rate and reducing the force of heart contractions, which helps to lower blood pressure. It may be prescribed along with other medications to help treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina, or irregular heartbeats. Other Lopressor uses include preventing heart failure, migraine headaches, tremors, and certain other conditions. Talk to your doctor about all possible Lopressor uses and whether or not Lopressor is right for your condition.

How do I take Lopressor?

Lopressor is available as 50mg and 100mg tablets. Your doctor will prescribe the best dose for you. Take your Lopressor medicine by mouth as prescribed by your doctor (typically 1-3 times a day with food). Do not stop taking Lopressor even if you feel fine, as suddenly stopping your dosage can lead to heart problems.

Before taking Lopressor, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to metoprolol (the active ingredient in the Lopressor drug) or any other medications (especially other beta blockers)
  • You have a history of heart rhythm, breathing, or blood circulation problems
  • You have or have ever had liver disease
  • You have a history or family history of mental disorders
  • You are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • You are currently taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs, or herbal products

What are the possible Lopressor side effects?

While not every patient who takes Lopressor will experience side effects, some patients have reported experiencing fatigue, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, digestion problems, depression, itchiness, or cold hands and feet. In some rare cases, Lopressor may decrease sexual ability. Contact your doctor right away if any of these side effects persist or interfere with your day-to-day life, or if you experience any of the following serious Lopressor side effects: difficulty breathing, rapid weight gain, swelling of the hands or feet, fainting, or an irregular heartbeat.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lopressor?

The Lopressor drug is most effective when taken regularly, so try to take it around the same time every day. If you do forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never double your dose to catch up.

How do I store Lopressor?

Lopressor should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture (not in the bathroom medicine cabinet) and somewhere that children and pets cannot easily access. Never let anyone else take your prescription medication. If your Lopressor pills have expired or you have talked to your doctor and no longer need this medication, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Lopressor?

If you overdose on Lopressor, you may experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, lightheadedness or fainting, a slow heartbeat, or swelling of the extremities. If you believe you have overdosed, call your local poison control center. If someone in your household has overdosed and is not breathing or can’t stand up, call 911.

Warnings

You should never stop taking Lopressor suddenly, as this may lead to increased chest pain or even a heart attack. If you no longer want to take Lopressor, talk to your doctor about gradually lowering your dosage so that you don’t experience any serious withdrawal effects.

Because Lopressor can cause drowsiness and dizziness, do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

Lopressor can make it more difficult for your body to regulate blood sugar, so if you are diabetic, make sure you are regularly monitoring your blood sugar levels. If you begin experiencing symptoms of high blood sugar (such as the need to urinate more than usual), tell your doctor.

Brand Names

Lopressor is a brand name for the generic drug metoprolol. Two other brand name combination products—Dutoprol and Lopressor HCT—are also available. Both of these drugs contain metroprolol and hydrochlorothiazide.

Remember, you can reduce your Lopressor cost by 83% when you claim your free discount from HelpRx. You can also get a free prescription discount card that will help you start saving on all qualifying medications.
