What is Toprol XL?
Toprol XL is a brand name for the beta blocker metoprolol ER, a cardiovascular agent that is prescribed to treat hypertension and angina; it is also used after a heart attack to prevent future attacks from occurring. It decreases blood pressure and improves blood flow by slowing the heart rate and relaxing blood vessels.
How do I take Toprol XL?
Toprol XL is a drug administered in tablet form that is taken once a day, usually with a meal. If you are having difficulty swallowing a whole tablet, ask your doctor for permission to split it and take each half one at a time. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Your doctor may alter the dosage strength during the course of your treatment. Do not stop taking this medication without your doctor’s permission.
Before taking Toprol XL, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to metoprolol or any of the ingredients in Toprol XL
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

- You have, or have had, pheochromocytoma, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism

What are the possible side effects of taking Toprol XL?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Toprol XL. Less severe conditions include cold hands or feet, gas, bloating, constipation, depression, lightheadedness, dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, runny nose, stomach pain, fatigue, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing), fainting, tachycardia, weight gain, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
What if I forget to take a dose of Toprol XL?
If you forget to take a scheduled dose of the Toprol XL drug, do so as soon as you remember and are able. If the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of tablets taken or change the dosing regimen to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Toprol XL?
Keep Toprol XL tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and protected against the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Toprol XL?
In the event of an overdose of Toprol XL, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include swelling of the extremities, fainting, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and dizziness.

Sudden discontinuation of Toprol XL may cause chest pain or heart attack. Do not stop taking this medication without a doctor’s permission. Toprol XL may make you drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Alcohol can exacerbate the side effects. This medication may interfere with the effectiveness of injectable epinephrine to treat an allergic reaction.
