Bromfed Dm Information:
What is Bromfed DM?
Bromfed DM is a cough syrup that is comprised of brompheniramine, dextromethorphan, and pseudoephedrine. Brompheniramine is an antihistamine that works to block allergy symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that acts on the brain rather than the respiratory system to reduce the need to cough. Dextromethorphan can act as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and also cause dissociative hallucination in high doses. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that is also a stimulant, making this medication non-drowsy. It works by causing vasoconstriction. The constricted blood vessels allow for less fluid to flow from the blood vessels and into the nose and throat which results in reduced mucus production. Bromfed DM controls allergy or cold symptoms but does not work to cure an infection.
How do I take Bromfed DM?
Take Bromfed DM syrup with a full glass of water. Measure your prescribed dose with a measuring device that is specifically made for taking medication. Household spoons are not accurate measurements of your dose. The usual dosage for adults is 10 ml every 4-6 hours and 5 ml every 4-6 hours for children. For children under 2, talk to your pediatrician for dosing information. Do not take more than 6 doses in a 24-hour period. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, when taking Bromfed DM as it dries up your mouth and nasal passages and causes mucus to thicken in the lungs. Drinking lots of water minimizes this effect.
Before taking Bromfed DM, tell your doctor if:
- You have asthma or breathing problems.
- You have high blood pressure or blood vessel problems.
- You have an overactive thyroid.
- You have an enlarged prostate or trouble urinating.
- You have a history of kidney, liver, or heart disease.
- You have diabetes or glaucoma.
- You are pregnant or breast feeding.
- You have stomach ulcers or intestinal problems.
- You experience seizures.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Bromfed DM.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially antidepressants like MAO inhibitors, antihistamines, beta blockers, medications for Parkinson’s disease, anticonvulsants for seizures, anxiety medication, and any drugs that may cause drowsiness such as pain relievers and sedatives.
What are the possible side effects of taking Bromfed DM?
Side effects from taking Bromfed DM include drowsiness, headache, vertigo, nausea, upset stomach, dry mouth and throat, and blurred vision. If you experience any unusual or bothersome side effects such as irregular heartbeat, allergic reaction, mood changes, or hallucination, contact your doctor.
What if I forget to take a dose of Bromfed DM?
Bromfed DM is usually taken as needed to treat symptoms. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as your cold or allergy symptoms start to return. Do not take a double dose of Bromfed DM to compensate for a missed dose.
How do I store Bromfed DM?
Store Bromfed DM tightly closed in its original container at a temperature between 46 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and extreme temperatures. Keep Bromfed DM cough syrup out of reach of children and those who are prone to drug abuse.
What happens if I overdose on Bromfed DM?
