Beconase Aq Information:
What is Beconase AQ?
Beconase AQ is a nasal spray that contains a corticosteroid drug called beclomethasone. It works by reducing inflammation and may block histamine and other irritating substances produced by the immune system. In addition to allergies, Beconase AQ can be prescribed to prevent nasal polyps from returning. This medication should NOT be used to treat symptoms resulting from an infection.
How do I take Beconase AQ?
The first time you use a bottle of Beconase AQ, or if you have not used it for seven days, you must prime the pump before using to get the correct dose. To do this, press down completely on the pump four times or until a full spray is released. After doing this, you will see 120 doses remaining in the bottle. Blow your nose to clear it as best as possible before using the spray. Tilt your head back and close one nostril with your fingers while you insert the spray nozzle into the affected nostril. Exhale completely. Pump one spray into the nostril as you inhale through the nostril. Hold your breath for several seconds and then exhale. Repeat the same process on the other side or apply two sprays if your doctor has prescribed it. This medication is usually used twice daily. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Beconase AQ, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to corticosteroids or any other medications.
- You have or think you may have an infection affecting the nose or eyes, or any other type of infection.
- You have ever had tuberculosis.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have heart disease or high blood pressure.
- You have osteoporosis.
- You have adrenal disease.
- You suffer from depression or another mental illness.
- You have diabetes.
- You have an underactive thyroid.
- You have seizures.
What are the possible side effects of taking Beconase AQ?
Possible side effects from using Beconase AQ include dry or irritated throat and nasal passages, nosebleeds, nausea, sneezing and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. If your symptoms get worse or don’t get better, you develop an infection or experience vision problems or muscle weakness, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
What if I forget to take a dose of Beconase AQ?
If you miss a dose of Beconase AQ, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, just take that one and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Beconase AQ?
Store Beconase AQ at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. This medication should be thrown away after the dose meter reads 0 or if the medication has expired.
What happens if I overdose on Beconase AQ?
Overdose on Beconase AQ will likely result in irritation of the nasal passages and nosebleeds. If the medication is overused for a long period of time it may result in muscle weakness, weight gain around the face, fatigue, loss of appetite and nausea and vomiting. Talk to your doctor if you think you are using too much medication. If someone accidentally ingests Beconase AQ, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Long-term use of corticosteroids can decrease the efficiency of your immune system and increase your chances of getting an infection. Tell your doctor right away if your symptoms don’t get better or if you notice signs of an infection.
