Tresiba Information:

What is Tresiba?

Tresiba is a man-made form of insulin. Insulin is normally produced in the pancreas and helps convert sugar (glucose) into energy. However, people with type 1 diabetes do not produce their own insulin, and people with type 2 diabetes have developed a resistance to the insulin their body produces. Insulin drugs like Tresiba help the body process glucose so that blood sugar levels don’t get too high.

How do I take Tresiba?

Follow your doctor’s dosing schedule for Tresiba; most patients will need to inject this medication once a day. Always attach a new needle to the FlexTouch pen before each injection, and monitor the dose counter on the pen to make sure you are using the right amount of medicine. Regularly monitor your blood sugar to make sure your Tresiba dose is effective. If you have questions about how to use or dispose of the FlexTouch pen, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Before taking Tresiba, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements, especially any oral diabetes medications
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of taking Tresiba?

Tresiba may cause low blood sugar, so make sure you are aware of the signs and always have a quick source of sugar, such as hard candy or fruit, on hand. Tresiba may also cause mild skin irritation or weight gain. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any serious side effects, including severe skin irritation at the injection site, shortness of breath, swollen hands or feet, irregular heart rate, extreme thirst or increased urination, muscle weakness, or numbness or tingling.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tresiba?

It is important to take Tresiba on a regular schedule in order to control your blood sugar levels. If you do forget a dose, inject it as soon as you remember. Make sure to leave at least eight hours between each dose, and don’t use extra insulin to make up for a dose you missed.

How do I store Tresiba?

Store unused FlexTouch pens in the refrigerator. Store pens you are currently using at room temperature, away from bright light and high heat. If you still have insulin left in a used pen after 56 days, throw it away, carefully following the instructions of your pharmacist. Never leave your medication somewhere that children or pets could easily access.

What happens if I overdose on Tresiba?

Overdosing on Tresiba can cause dangerously low blood sugar, which may lead to stomach pain, excessive sweating, difficulty speaking, blurred vision, tremors, seizures, or coma. If you believe that you or someone in your home has overdosed on the Tresiba drug, get emergency medical help right away.

Warnings

Tresiba should be injected under the skin only; avoid injecting it into a muscle or vein. Avoid driving or performing tasks that require clear focus until you know how the medication affects you. It’s also important to avoid drinking alcohol or using medicines that contain alcohol, as this can cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low.

Brand Names

Synthetic insulin products like Tresiba are only available under brand names. There are numerous brand name insulins available, including Lantus, Humalog, Novolog, and Levemir. These synthetic insulins do not all act in the same way, so talk to your doctor to determine which medication is right for you. No matter what product your doctor prescribes, you can take advantage of the reusable coupons on our site. Just search for the medication you need to see how much you can save.
