What is Levemir?

Levemir (insulin detemir) is a recombinant insulin analogue used to treat both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes alone or in combination with other short-acting or oral antidiabetic medications. It works by supplementing the insulin produced by the body and so prevents the liver from producing excess sugar. It also assists the process of transferring glucose from the blood stream to body tissues.

How do I take Levemir?

Dosing should be determined by your blood-glucose levels at the time of injection in accordance with your doctor's instruction. Injections by either syringe with vial or pen are given subcutaneously. Never use this medication with an insulin pump.

Often, Levemir is taken either 1 time daily with the evening meal, or 2 times daily at least 12 hours apart. Most often, Levemir can be injected into the upper arm, thigh, or stomach.

Only use your Levemir if the fluid is clear and colorless. If it's discolored or cloudy, discard and call your doctor for a new prescription.

Before taking Levemir, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
• You are taking other drugs or supplements that affect your blood-glucose levels, including asthma medication, diuretics, heart or heart rhythm medications, steroids, and thyroid disorder therapies.
• You are already taking other diabetic medications.
• You have had an allergic reaction to other synthetic insulins.
• You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder.

 

• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Levemir?

Some side effects require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (itchy rash all over the body, wheezing or trouble breathing, fast heart rate, feeling as though you'll pass out, unusual sweating), swelling in your hands or feet, swelling with redness or itchiness at the injection site, low potassium (confusion, extreme thirst, increased urination, feeling limp or muscle weakness, uneven heart rate, leg discomfort), or severe hypoglycemia.

Common side effects include: weight gain, back or stomach pain, cold and flu symptoms, mild headache, and thickening skin at injection site. 

 

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Levemir?

Never inject a double dose of this medication to make up for a missed dose. If only a short time has passed since you missed your dose, you may take your dose as soon as you remember. However, if it's been some time, then you need to refer to your doctor for instructions.

 

• Storage

How do I store Levemir?

Vials and injection pens are not stored the same way. Always check the information packet that comes with your prescription to store your medication correctly. Unopened (unused) vials and pens can be stored either at room temperature or in the refrigerator, away from sources of heat and bright light.

Never freeze Levemir. If your medication is frozen, throw it away.

Opened (in use) vials can be stored at either room temperature or in the refrigerator and away from heat and light for up to 42 days.

Opened (in use) injection pens should be stored at room temperature and away from heat and light for up to 42 days. Do not refrigerate pens.

What happens if I overdose on Levemir?

Symptoms of overdose include loss of consciousness, seizure, and hypoglycemia. If you suspect overdose, seek immediate emergency medical assistance. Be sure your friends and family know how to help you in case of emergency.

Warnings

You should always check your blood-glucose levels before taking a dose. Taking Levemir on time as instructed and with changes in your eating or exercise habits can lead to hypoglycemia.

If you receive Levemir in vials, your prescription may not automatically come with needles. Talk to your pharmacist about getting what you need. You should also watch for signs of hyperglycemia. Talk to your doctor about how to address when your blood-glucose level is too high between Levemir doses.
