Lantus Information:

What is Lantus?

Lantus is the brand-name for insulin glargine that is marketed by the Sanofi pharmaceutical company. Insulin glarine is a long-acting insulin analog that helps to control insulin levels throughout the day. It is said that a dose of Lantus never peaks as it slowly releases steady doses of insulin over a 24-hour period. It works in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes by helping move sugar from the blood stream to other cells where it can be converted to energy. It also stops the liver from producing more glucose.

Sanofi pharmaceutical company offers Lantus patient assistance programs that provide free drugs to those who don’t have drug coverage from health insurance and meet certain financial requirements. They also have a reimbursement program for Lantus. If you do not qualify for a Lantus patient assistance program, coupons and discount cards from HelpRx can be a good alternative to moderate the cost of this essential drug.

How do I take Lantus?

Lantus comes in a vial or in dosing pens that contain a solution of insulin to be injected under the skin, not into veins or muscle tissue. Always check your vials or injections to make sure that they are not cloudy, discolored, or contain floating particles. In these cases the medication should be disposed of and replaced. If you purchase Lantus vials, you will have to use a syringe to inject your medication. Lantus should be taken at the same time every day at a time that you choose. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist carefully to inject this medication. Inject Lantus into the upper arm, buttocks, abdomen, or thighs. Rotate injection sites within the same area that you choose. Check your blood sugar regularly to make sure the insulin is properly regulating your levels.

Before taking Lantus, tell your doctor if:
  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease
  • You are hypoglycemic or have had episodes of hypoglycemia.
  • You are allergic to insulin or any of the other ingredients in Lantus.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
