Sprix Information:

What is Sprix?

Sprix is the brand name of an NSAID medication called ketorolac. Sprix is a unique formulation because it is administered in the form of a nasal spray. Spraying this medication into the nose allows for faster absorption of the medication, making its pain relieving effects felt more quickly and more strongly. The analgesic action of Sprix is said to be on par with that of opioid medications.

How do I take Sprix?

Before using Sprix, the pump must be activated. Point the nasal spray away from your face and press down on the pump completely 5 times. You should start to see a fine mist coming out of the bottle. This medication is not meant to be inhaled, but absorbed into the blood stream through the nasal passages. Tilt your head slightly backwards and insert the tip of the nasal spray into your nostril. Point the container away from the center of your nose and spray once into your nostril, then resume breathing normally through the mouth and pinch the nostril shut in order to allow the medication to be absorbed. If two sprays are prescribed, repeat the same steps in the next nostril. You will not have to reactivate the pump. This bottle is only good for 24 hours, and the maximum dosage is one dose every 8 hours.

Before taking Sprix, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, especially other NSAIDs or aspirin.
  • You have asthma.
  • You are allergic to NSAIDs or any of the ingredients in Sprix.
  • You have stomach ulcers or a history of gastrointestinal ulcers.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You bleed easily or have trouble with blood clotting.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You’ve recently had a heart attack or stroke.

What are the possible side effects of taking Sprix?

Possible Sprix drug side effects include nose pain, throat irritation, stuffy nose, watery eyes, a decrease in urination and elevated blood pressure. Other more serious side effects include high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, fluid retention, kidney problems, gastrointestinal ulcers, low red blood cell count, rash with blisters, fever, liver problems, stomach pain, blood in vomit or stools, slurred speech and chest pain. Stop using Sprix and call your doctor right away if you experience any severe side effects. Risk for severe side effects increases with extended use.

What if I forget to take a dose of Sprix?

Sprix is usually taken as needed with a maximum dose of once every 8 hours or three times a day.

How do I store Sprix?

Store Sprix in a cool, dry place in the container it comes in. After opening a bottle of Sprix, it must be discarded after 24 hours, even if there is still medication in the bottle. Keep this medication out of the light and away from children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Sprix?

Overdose on Sprix will most likely result in abdominal pain, stomach ulcers, nausea, vomiting, hyperventilation, and kidney dysfunction. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on or accidentally ingested or inhaled a large amount of Sprix, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim’s symptoms are severe, call 911 or take him or her to the emergency room.

Warnings

Sprix should not be used for more than 5 days at a time. It is to be used for the short-term management of pain only. Extensive use can cause dangerous side effects. This medication should not be prescribed to minors or used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
