What is Aspirin?

 

Aspirin is available with or without a prescription. It is a generic salicylate that works by stopping the body’s production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

 

Nonprescription Aspirin is used to reduce fever and to relieve mild to moderate pain from arthritis, colds, headaches, menstrual periods, and muscle aches. It is also used to prevent heart attacks in patients who have had a heart attack in the past, in in patients who have angina, or chest pain. It is also used to reduce the risk of death in people who have recently had a heart attack.

 

Nonprescription aspirin is also used to prevent ischemic strokes or mini-strokes in patients who have experienced these conditions in the past.

 

Prescription Aspirin is used to relieve the symptoms of many conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and certain other rheumatologic conditions.

How do I use Aspirin?

 

Nonprescription Aspirin comes as a tablet, a delayed-release tablet, a chewable tablet, a powder, and a gum to be taken orally. It also comes as a suppository to use rectally.

Prescription Aspirin comes as an extended-release (or long-acting) tablet.  

 

Nonprescription Aspirin is typically taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed to treat fever or pain.

If you are taking nonprescription Aspirin to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke, it is typically suggested that it be taken once daily.

 

Prescription Aspirin is typically prescribed to be taken 2 or more times per day.

If you are taking the extended-release tablets, swallow them whole with a full glass of water. Do not break, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets.

Chewable aspirin tablets may be chewed, crushed, or swallowed whole, and they should be taken with a full glass of water.

Before using Aspirin, tell your doctor if:

 

• you are allergic to Aspirin or any other medications

• you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

• you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

• you have or have ever had asthma or a frequently stuffed or runny nose, or nasal polyps. If you have these conditions, there is a risk that you will have an allergic reaction to aspirin.

• you often have heartburn, upset stomach, or stomach pain

• you have or have ever had ulcers, anemia, or bleeding problems such as hemophilia

• you have or have ever had kidney disease or liver disease

 

Additional precautions:

 

• If you drink three or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor if you should take aspirin.

• If you are taking aspirin on a regular basis to prevent heart attack or stroke, do not take ibuprofen without talking to your doctor.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of using Aspirin?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

• nausea or vomiting

• stomach pain

• heartburn

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

• hives or rash

• swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat

• wheezing, hoarseness, or difficulty breathing

• rapid heartbeat or fast breathing

• cold, clammy skin

• ringing in the ears

• loss of hearing

• bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

• black, tarry, or bloody stool

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to use a dose of Aspirin?

If you have been instructed by your doctor to take Aspirin regularly, take your missed dose of Aspirin as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Aspirin?

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Aspirin may include:

 

• burning pain in the throat or stomach

• vomiting

• decreased urination

• fever

• restlessness or irritability

• fear or nervousness

• drowsiness

•  

  hallucination or seizure

• shaking or tremors

• loss of consciousness

• confusion

• abnormally excited mood

• dizziness or double vision

• Do not let anyone else take your medication.

• Stop taking this drug and call your doctor if your fever lasts longer than 3 days, or if your pain lasts longer than 10 days. Contact your doctor if any part of your body that was painful becomes red or swollen.
