What is Sonata?
Sonata comes in capsule form to be taken orally as directed by your doctor.
Sonata is used to treat insomnia. However, it does not help patients with insomnia to stay asleep longer, nor does it decrease the number of times that patients with insomnia awaken during the night.
Sonata is in a class of medications called hypnotics, and it works by slowing activity in the brain to allow sleep.
How do I use Sonata?
Sonata capsules are available in strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg and should be taken by mouth with or without food, usually right before bedtime. Consult with your doctor for specific dosage and use instructions for this medication.
Before using Sonata, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Sonata or any other medications
- You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or herbal or nutritional supplements
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding
Additional precautions:
- This drug may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this drug affects you.

What are the possible side effects of using Sonata?

- numbness, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet
- headache
- loss of appetite

- sensitivity to noise
- distorted sense of smell

- rash, itching, or hives
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes
- hoarseness
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
What if I forgot to use a dose of Sonata?
Sonata may be taken as needed. If you are on a dosing schedule for this drug, take your missed dose of Sonata as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
How do I store Sonata?
Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.
What happens if I overdose on Sonata?
In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of overdose on Sonata may include:
- drowsiness
- confusion
- slowed or difficult breathing
- coordination problems
- loss of consciousness or coma

- This drug may be habit-forming. Do not take more of this drug than has been prescribed, and take this drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
