Restoril Information:
What is Restoril?
The primary Restoril uses are helping patients fall asleep and remain asleep for 7 to 8 hours. As a sedative-hypnotic drug, Restoril promotes sleep by slowing brain activity and producing a calming effect. It is not intended to be a long-term solution to insomnia and is generally prescribed for a treatment period of 7 to 10 days.
There may be some additional Restoril uses, and your doctor should be able to tell you whether the medication may be beneficial to you.
How do I take Restoril?
Take your Restoril medication directly before you plan to go to bed, and only take it when you can dedicate a period of 7 to 8 hours to sleep. The dosage will depend on your age, medical conditions, and response to previous treatment, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Talk to your doctor if you plan to stop taking this drug, as he or she may decide to gradually decrease your dosage to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
Before taking Restoril, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to temazepam or any of the inactive ingredients in Restoril medication (your doctor or pharmacist can provide you with a list)
- You have a history or family history of substance or alcohol abuse
- You are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are currently breast-feeding
- You have a history or family history of depression or have experienced suicidal thoughts
- You have a respiratory condition or history of respiratory problems
- You are currently taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
What are the possible Restoril side effects?
Many patients use Restoril without ever experiencing any serious side effects, but some patients have reported noticeable side effects, including short-term memory loss, mood swings, depression, grogginess upon waking, nausea, and vomiting. In a few rare cases, patients have engaged in activities such as driving, eating, having sex, and walking while partially asleep. Tell your doctor immediately if you believe you have engaged in any of these sleep activities, or if you develop a rash, hives, swelling around the face, or difficulty breathing and swallowing.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete list of Restoril drug side effects. If you experience any unusual physical effects or changes in your mental state, inform your doctor.
What if I forget to take a dose of Restoril?
Restoril is only intended to be taken before bedtime, so if you miss a dose, do not take the next one until the next time you will be able to sleep for 7 to 8 hours straight.
How do I store Restoril?
Keep Restoril at room temperature in its original container, away from children, pets, light, and moisture. It is not recommended to keep this drug in a bathroom medicine cabinet, as the moisture may cause it to break down more quickly. Dispose of any Restoril capsules that have expired or that you are not going to take.
What happens if I overdose on Restoril?
Overdosing on the Restoril drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, loss of consciousness, and labored breathing. If you believe that you have overdosed, contact poison control. If your loved one has been taking Restoril and you see him or her collapse or struggling to breath, call 911 immediately.
Warnings
Because Restoril causes some people to feel groggy during the daytime, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the drug makes you feel. Do not drink alcohol during the period of time that you are prescribed Restoril, as alcohol may exacerbate the side effects. Inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, as certain medications may react with Restoril. Because Restoril is a prescription drug and a controlled substance, you should never give or sell it to someone else.
