Ortho Evra Information:
What is Ortho Evra?
Ortho Evra (combination Ethinyl Estradiol, Norelgestromin) is a transdermal patch that releases female hormones (progestin and estrogen) into the blood stream in order to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing ovulation, thins the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment and thickens cervical mucus to block sperm.
How do I take Ortho Evra?
Always follow your doctor's instructions and do not skip your "off" week unless instructed to do so. If you're unsure about how or where to attach the patch to your skin, refer to your doctor or pharmacist for assistance. Be sure that none of the edges or corners are loose.
Wear 1 Ortho Evra patch for 1 week for 3 consecutive weeks. Allow 7 days to pass before applying the first patch of your next prescription; you should have your period during this week. Do not allow more than 7 days to pass, and during the 3 weeks with patches, do not go more than 24 hours without a patch on. If you do, use back up birth control and consult your doctor.
Before taking Ortho Evra, tell your doctor if:
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You recently gave birth or plan to breastfeed.
• You smoke, especially if you smoke 15+ cigarettes per day.
• You have abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor.
• You have diabetes, especially if it has caused vision, circulation, or kidney problems.
• You have or have a history of cancer, especially breast, liver, or uterine cancer.
• You have or have a history of severe migraines with aura or vision changes, numbness, or weakness, especially if you're over the age of 35.
• You have or have a history of genetic blood clotting disorders.
• You have or have a history of uncontrollable/untreated high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke, heart attack, or other heart disease.
• You have or have a history of heart rhythm or valve disorders.
• You have previously had a bad reaction to hormonal birth control, including jaundice or allergic reaction.
• You have or have a history of gallbladder disease or disorder.
• You are taking any other drugs, medications, supplements, or vitamins, whether prescribed or otherwise, including antifungals, antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-retrovirals, immunosuppressants, Vitamin C, statins, or acetaminophen.
What are the possible side effects of taking Ortho Evra?
Some side effects from Ortho Evra are severe and require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives with itching, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), sudden numbness or weakness especially in one side of the body, confusion, slurred speech or sudden vision loss, balance problems, changes in migraine severity, sudden and severe headache, mood changes especially depression, tired feeling or sleep problems, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, chest pain or pressure especially spreading to your shoulder or jaw, rapid breathing or wheezing, sudden cough, coughing up blood, unusual sweating or itching, severe nausea, upper stomach pain, swelling in the hands or feet (including ankles), warmth and swelling with redness or pain in one or both legs, unusual lump in a breast, dark urine, clay-colored stool.
Common side effects can include: mild nausea or stomach pain, menstrual cramps, spotting or breakthrough bleeding, breast swelling or mild tenderness, mild headache, minor mood changes including increased anxiety, skin irritation where the patch is worn including redness or itching.
What if I forget to take a dose of Ortho Evra?
If you have forgotten to apply the patch, or if the patch has fallen off, and less than 24 hours have passed, you may try to re-apply the patch or use a new patch. If it has been over 24 hours, you will need to apply a new patch and restart your cycle. You should use backup birth control if you have forgotten your patch for over 24 hours and consult your doctor if you have any questions.
How do I store Ortho Evra?
Keep Ortho Evra patches in their foil pouches until they're ready to be used and store at room temperature away from excess moisture and heat. Do not refrigerate.
What happens if I overdose on Ortho Evra?
Call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance.
Warnings
This medication is intended only to prevent pregnancy and will not protect against sexually transmitted infections such as HIV/AIDS. Do not smoke while using Ortho Evra, as it greatly increases your risk of stroke, clots, or heart attacks, especially in women over the age of 35.
This medication may not be effective in women who weigh more than 198 lbs. Grapefruit may cause unwanted side effects. Talk to your doctor about any necessary changes in diet. Certain medications will interfere with the efficacy of hormonal birth control, including antibiotics, antidepressants, and even certain supplements such as St. John's Wart. Consult your doctor about what you need to avoid, and always tell your doctor you're using Ortho Evra before prescribing you a new medication.
Brand Names
While a generic version of Ortho Evra is available on the market (xulane), the difference in price between the generic and Ortho Evra is very small. Because there aren't any other brands for Ortho Evra on the market, its cost can still be a little hefty. Take advantage of our free discount on Ortho Evra with our coupon for up to 75% off at your local pharmacy.
