Nuvaring Information:

What is the Nuvaring?

The Nuvaring is a flexible, non-biodegradable, transparent, colorless ring that is inserted vaginally and used as a method of birth control. This medicine combines two types of female hormones, estrogen and progestin, and is used to prevent ovulation and pregnancy. Each ring is effective for one month. The Nuvaring releases an average of 0.120 mg/day of etonogestrel and 0.015 mg/day of ethinyl estradiol over a three-week period of use. The ring is made of ethylene vinylacetate copolymers and magnesium stearate and is latex-free. Nuvaring has an outer diameter of 54 mm and a cross-sectional diameter of 4 mm.

How do I take the Nuvaring?

Use HelpRx coupons for Nuvaring or a discount card to purchase your birth control in your local pharmacy. Then insert one single Nuvaring into the vagina at a time. The ring is to remain in place continuously for three weeks. It is then removed for a one-week break, during which a period usually occurs. A new ring is inserted one week after the last ring was removed.

There are several insertion positions that include standing with one leg up, squatting, or lying down. The ring is to be compressed and inserted into the vagina. The exact position of Nuvaring inside the vagina is not critical for its function, though it must be inserted on the appropriate day and left in place for three consecutive weeks.

The ring should be removed three weeks later on the same day of the week as it was inserted and at about the same time. The ring can be removed by hooking the index finger under the forward rim or by grasping the rim between the index and middle finger and pulling it out.

Before taking Nuvaring, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation or dietary supplement
  • You have a history of headaches and/or migraines
  • You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • You have high blood pressure; high cholesterol, triglycerides, or calcium levels; heart valve problems; or pancreatitis or gallbladder problems; or if you are obese
  • You have breast nodules, fibrocystic disease of the breast, an abnormal breast x-ray or mammogram, endometriosis or endometrial carcinomas, uterine fibroids, prolapsed uterus, or irregular or unusual menstrual periods
  • You have diabetes, headaches, migraine headaches, epilepsy, or a history of mental depression or toxic shock syndrome (TSS)
  • You are having surgery
  • You are a heavy smoker, especially if you are older than 35 years

What are the possible side effects of taking Nuvaring?

Side effects that should be reported to your doctor include:

Irregular uterine bleeding, nausea, breast tenderness, headache or migraine, change in appetite or weight, dizziness, mild hair loss, nervousness, stomach cramps or bloating, vaginal spotting, breakthrough bleeding, severe allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, absent menstrual period, breast discharge; breast lumps, changes in urine, mental or mood changes, numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; pale stools, severe pain or tenderness in the stomach, shortness of breath, slurred speech, symptoms of toxic shock syndrome (ie: diarrhea, dizziness, sudden fever, sunburn-like rash on the face or body, or vomiting), vision changes, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

What if I forget to take a dose of the Nuvaring?

Call your doctor or pharmacist for instructions.

If the Nuvaring vaginal ring has slipped out of the vagina and it has been out less than three hours, you should still be protected from pregnancy. If the ring has been out of the vagina for more than three hours you may not adequately be protected from pregnancy, and you must use an extra method of birth control until it has been in place for seven days in a row.

How do I store the Nuvaring?

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing. Keep out of the reach of children.

Discard outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

What happens if I overdose on the Nuvaring?

Nuvaring is unlikely to cause an overdose because the ring holding the medicine releases a steady amount of contraceptive hormones. Do not use more than one ring at a time. Overdose of combination hormonal contraceptives may cause nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding. If any of these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately.

Warnings

It is important to use an additional method of contraception during the first cycle that the Nuvaring is used. If you are using this medicine for hormone related problems, it may take several cycles of use to see improvement in your condition. Smoking increases the risk of getting a blood clot or having a stroke while you are using birth control, especially if you are more than 35 years old.  This medicine can make your body retain fluid, making your fingers, hands, or ankles swell. Your blood pressure can go up. Contact your doctor immediately if you feel you are retaining fluid.

Nuvaring can cause increased sun sensitivity.  If you wear contact lenses and notice visual changes, or if the lenses begin to feel uncomfortable, consult your eye care specialist. In some women, tenderness, swelling, or minor bleeding of the gums may occur. Notify your dentist if this happens. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly may help to limit this. If you are going to have elective surgery, you may need to stop using this medicine before the surgery. Consult your health care professional for advice. This medicine does not protect you against HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases.
