Desogen Information:

What is Desogen?

Desogen is a birth control drug. In addition to preventing pregnancy, this medication may also be used to help make menstrual cycles lighter and more regular, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, or reduce the appearance of hormone-related acne. Desogen contains ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and desogestrel (a progestin), and these female hormones work together to prevent ovulation and change the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg.

How do I take Desogen?

If you are just starting this oral contraceptive, take the first pill in the packet on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. You should continue taking one pill every day, going in the order the pills appear in the packet. Take your Desogen pills at the same time every day.

Before taking Desogen, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements
  • You have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have liver disease or liver cancer
  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer
  • You have had any breast lumps or an abnormal mammogram
  • You have a blood clotting disorder or a history of blood clots
  • You have heart disease or high blood pressure
  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • You have any diabetes complications, such as problems with your kidneys, circulation, or vision
  • You get severe migraines
  • You have ever had jaundice caused by pregnancy or oral birth control
  • You are a smoker
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have irregular menstrual periods
  • You have tuberculosis
  • You are breastfeeding, have recently given birth, or think you may be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Desogen?

The Desogen drug may cause mild side effects when you first start taking it, but these side effects usually go away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, you should let your doctor know if you have persistent or worsening: nausea, weight changes, menstrual cycle changes, decreased libido, hair loss, skin darkening, vaginal irritation, problems wearing contact lenses, or breast tenderness or swelling. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following serious side effects: new or worsening migraines, swollen hands or feet, breast lumps, chest pain, pain spreading to your shoulder or jaw, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision or coordination problems, sudden cough, coughing up blood, difficulty breathing, or signs of depression.

What if I forget to take a dose of Desogen?

It’s important that you take your ‘active’ Desogen pills (the first 21 hormone-containing pills in the package) at the same time every day. However, if you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in one day. If you miss two doses in the first one or two weeks of the packet, take two pills for two days in a row, and then resume your normal dosing schedule. If you miss two pills in the third week or more than two pills in the first or second week, throw out the rest of the packet and start a new pack from the beginning. You should use a backup method of birth control for at least a week after forgetting two or more pills. It does not matter if you miss a dose one of the last seven pills in the pack because these ‘reminder’ pills do not contain hormones.

How do I store Desogen?

Store Desogen in a dry space at room temperature. Do not leave it anywhere that children can reach it, and do not remove any Desogen pills from their packaging until you are ready to take them.

What happens if I overdose on Desogen?

Overdosing on the Desogen drug may cause nausea or abnormal vaginal bleeding. If you believe that you have overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

If you smoke or are over 35, you have an increased risk of developing a blood clot while taking Desogen. Talk to your doctor about your medical history to determine if this oral contraceptive is safe for you. Keep in mind that while Desogen will help prevent pregnancy, it will not stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Brand Names

The combination of estrogen estradiol and desogestrel is also available in the brand name drug Ortho-Cept and in the generics Apri, Solia, Reclipsen, Emoquette, and Enskyce. Talk to your doctor to determine if one of these or another birth control drug is right for you, and use a HelpRx coupon to reduce the cost of any medication not covered by your insurance.
