Olanzapine Information:

What is olanzapine?

Olanzapine is a generic antipsychotic drug that is mainly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is also sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder. It works by balancing the chemicals in the brain, namely dopamine and serotonin. It also affects the histamine and adrenergic receptors which produces side effects such as low blood pressure, drowsiness and constipation. Psychosocial therapy is recommended along with medications for treatment of schizophrenia. Therapy will not cure this illness, but can help an individual maintain their medication schedule and learn valuable social skills. This is especially recommended for children or young adults starting medication.

How do I take olanzapine?

Olanzapine comes as a regular tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, or as an injection given by your doctor. Tablets are usually taken once a day at the same time every day with or without food.  Allow the disintegrating tablets to dissolve in your mouth. You may drink liquids immediately after. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated while taking olanzapine. Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose and then slowly increase your dosage over time. If you are receiving injections, they are usually given once every 2-4 weeks by your healthcare provider. You will be monitored for three hours to be sure that you don’t experience side effects from the injection. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while being treated with olanzapine.

Before taking olanzapine, tell your doctor if:

  • You have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • You have taken medications for your condition in the past and if they were effective or not.
  • You have a history of diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, prostate disease, or glaucoma.
  • A medication has ever caused you to have tremors, ticks, muscle stiffness or involuntary movements.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You smoke, drink, or use illegal drugs.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially antidepressants, quinolone antibiotics, anxiety medication, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, medications for Parkinson’s disease or seizures, antihistamines, medications for ulcers or irritable bowel disease, and any other medications for mental illness.
  • You have ever had a stroke, heart attack, or seizures.
  • You do extreme exercise or you are exposed to high temperatures.
  • You have abnormally low or high blood pressure.
  • You are dehydrated, vomiting, or have diarrhea.
  • You have an irregular heartbeat or long QT syndrome.

What are the possible side effects of taking olanzapine?

Side effects from taking olanzapine include constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, restlessness, stomach pain, and changes in body temperature, sex drive, weight, and menstrual periods.  If you experience seizures, tremors, confusion, numbness, tingling, painful menstruation, painful urination, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, headache, or you have pink urine, contact your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of olanzapine?

If you miss a dose of olanzapine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of olanzapine to compensate for a missed one. Talk to your doctor about what to do in situations where you miss doses.

How do I store olanzapine?

Store olanzapine tightly closed in its original container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on olanzapine?

Signs of overdose on olanzapine include accelerated heart rate, slurred speech, sudden involuntary movements, agitation, sedation and coma. If you or someone you know has overdosed on olanzapine, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not responding, call 911.

Warnings

Olanzapine may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid operating a vehicle or heavy machinery. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication as it can increase unwanted side effects and reduce the efficacy of treatment. This medication can cause hyperglycemia. Your blood sugar levels should be tested before starting treatment with olanzapine. Patients should be monitored for suicidal thoughts when beginning treatment. Tell your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself or your symptoms don’t improve. Antipsychotics like olanzapine have been known to cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) in some cases. Signs of NMS include muscle stiffness, extreme fever, irregular pulse or blood pressure, and sweating profusely. Report any of these symptoms to your doctor at once.
