What is Symbyax?
Symbyax is a combination of the antidepressant fluoxetine and the antipsychotic medication olanzapine; it is prescribed to treat depression resulting from bipolar disorder as well as treatment-resistant depression. Fluoxetine is an SSRI that works by increasing serotonin levels; olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic that changes certain natural substances in the brain.
How do I take Symbyax?
Symbyax is dispensed as a capsule that is taken orally once a day with water. The actual dosing frequency, however, will depend on the strength prescribed, the condition being treated, and the medical profile of the patient. Swallow the entire capsule; do not crush, split, break, or chew it. Do not stop taking Symbyax without first notifying your doctor.
Before taking Symbyax, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to fluoxetine, olanzapine, or any of the medications in the Symbyax drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You have had a heart attack or stroke
- You have diabetes of high blood sugar
- You have heart or liver disease
- You have a history of seizures
- You have heart arrhythmia
- You have hypertension or hypotension
- You have breast cancer
- You have high cholesterol or triglyceride levels
- You have low white blood cell count
- You have prostate disease
- You have glaucoma
- You have paralytic ileus
What are the possible side effects of taking Symbyax?
Mild side effects may include breast enlargement or discharge, diminished sex drive or ability, constipation, depression, sleep difficulties, difficulty walking, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, excessive sweating, late or missed menstrual periods, appetite loss, nausea, nervousness, pain in arms, legs, back, or joints, restlessness, sore throat, tremors, unusual behavior, weakness, and weight gain or loss. If any of these appear and persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Symbyax patient assistance. Some severe side effects that necessitate an immediate medical response include suicidal thoughts and behaviors, fever, joint pain, confusion, tachycardia, arrhythmia, severe muscle stiffness, visual and aural hallucinations, or seizures.
What if I forget to take a dose of Symbyax?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Symbyax drug, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next one, skip the missed dose and return to the original schedule. Do not increase the number of capsules taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Symbyax?
Keep Symbyax capsules tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Talk with your pharmacist about the proper method for disposing of any expired or unused capsules.
What happens if I overdose on Symbyax?
If an overdose Symbyax is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Symbyax patient assistance.
Warnings
Do not take Symbyax if you are pregnant; contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking it. This medication may make you sleepy or drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. This medication may cause suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Symbyax may be life-threatening if taken by seniors with dementia-related psychosis. Alcohol can exacerbate the effects of this medication. Do not consume any grapefruit products while taking Symbyax. This medication may cause hyperglycemia. Smoking diminishes the effectiveness of this medication.
