What is Nucynta?
Nucynta is an analgesic (pain killer) of the opioid class prescribed to treat moderate to severe acute pain working by altering how the brain and central nervous system perceive pain. Because Nucynta medication is a Schedule II narcotic, a new prescription is required for every refill. An extended release formulation is available for those with neuropathic pain caused by diabetes who require twenty-four hour access to pain medication and whose condition cannot be treated with any other pain medication.
How do I take Nucynta?
Nucynta is a prescription-only medication in tablet form, taken four to six times a day depending on the patient’s needs and the doctor’s recommendations. This medication may be taken with or without food, and should be taken with water or milk to help facilitate swallowing and prevent stomach upset.
Before taking Nucynta, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tapentadol or any substances in the Nucynta tablet
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, or any vitamins or supplements
- You are taking, or have stopped taking in the previous two weeks, MAO inhibitors
- You are taking antidepressants, migraine medications, antihistamines, or medications to treat irritable bowel syndrome, urinary tract problems, Parkinson’s disease, or ulcers
- You are taking SSRIs, SSNRIs, or mirtazapine
- You have been treated for paralytic ileus, blockages of the stomach or intestines, or urinary problems
- You have, or have had, a disease of the pancreas or gallbladder, kidney disease, liver disease, or thyroid disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Nucynta?
Some patients have reported side effects from taking this medication. Less severe side effects of Nucynta include drowsiness, weakness, changes in appetite, or gastrointestinal problems such as heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or stomach pain; sleep difficulties; increased anxiety; flushing or increased sweating; unusual dreams; or a dry mouth. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects of Nucynta include visual and aural hallucinations, problems breathing, chest pain, seizures, feeling lightheaded or faint, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, a rash or hives, and itching.
What if I forget to take a dose of Nucynta?
For many patients, Nucynta is taken on an as needed basis. However, if your doctor has placed you on a dosing schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose. In this case, forego the missed one and resume the prescribed schedule. Do not take multiple doses of Nucynta to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Nucynta?
Keep Nucynta tightly closed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from extremes of heat and humidity. Because of its potential for abuse, it is recommended that you monitor the number of tablets in the Nucynta prescription in order to detect any unauthorized access. Discuss with your pharmacist the best method for disposing of unused or expired doses.
What happens if I overdose on Nucynta?
If an overdose of Nucynta is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for assistance. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services immediately at 911. Side effects of Nucynta indicating an overdose include constricted or dilated pupils, muscle weakness, sleepiness, slowed heart rate, cold or clammy skin, as well as loss of consciousness or stopped or slowed respiration.
Warnings
Nucynta may cause life threatening breathing problems, especially at the beginning of the prescription or if the strength is increased. This medication may cause constipation. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools while taking Nucynta medication. Nucynta can be addictive and tolerance to it can develop. Do not stop taking this medication abruptly as there may be withdrawal symptoms Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
