Nexplanon Information:
What is Nexplanon?
Nexplanon is a reversible form of long-term contraception, considered the most effective birth control method on the market. It consists of matchstick-sized rod inserted into the arm, containing 68mg of the progestin etonogestrel that is slowly released over a three-year period. Although Nexplanon allows follicular development, its primary action is preventing ovulation.
How do I take Nexplanon?
In order to minimize accidental misplacement and possible nerve damage, a qualified healthcare professional in a clinical setting will insert the Nexplanon rod. The bandage placed over the entry site should be kept cleaned and left in place for twenty-four hours. If Nexplanon is inserted before the first five days of the menstrual cycle, an alternative means of contraception must be used. Nexplanon can remain in place for up to three years; however, it can be removed at any time if pregnancy is desired.
Before taking Nexplanon, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
- You are allergic to etonogestrel
- You have diabetes
- You have high blood pressure or cholesterol
- You have kidney, heart, gall bladder, or liver disease
- You have an ovarian cyst
- You have a history of depression
- You have had a heart attack, blood clots, or heart disease
- You are taking HIV protease inhibitors
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplement, including St. John’s Wort
- You are taking bosentan, anti-fungal medications, felbamate, phenytoin, griseofulvin, carbamazepine, topiramate, or rifampin
What are the possible side effects of taking Nexplanon?
Some patients have reported Nexplanon side effects. Less severe side effects include acne, back pain, breast tenderness or pain, agitation, depression, changes in the menstrual cycle, menstrual cramps, mood swings, nausea, dizziness, headaches (mild), pain or tingling at point of insertion, vaginal discharge or itching, flu-like symptoms dry eyes, or weight gain. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe Nexplanon side effects requiring immediate medical attention include infection of the insertion site; signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face, mouth, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; rash, hives, or itching); or sudden weakness or numbing of one side of the body. Other severe side effects include severe pelvic cramping or pain; sudden and severe headaches or pain behind the eyes; chest pain or a heavy feeling in the chest; symptoms of jaundice; the onset of depression; a lump in the breast; jaundice; or Stage 2 hypertension.
What if I forget to take a dose of Nexplanon?
Because Nexplanon is an implant with a three-year life cycle, forgetting to take a dose is unlikely. Your healthcare professional will notify you when the expiration date approaches.
How do I store Nexplanon?
Because Nexplanon is available only in a healthcare setting, and is inserted into the arm onsite, there are no concerns about storage.
What happens if I overdose on Nexplanon?
Because a clinician inserts the Nexplanon rod and the dosage is controlled, an overdose is unlikely. However, individuals react differently; symptoms of an inadvertent overdose include vaginal bleeding, vomiting, or sustained nausea.
