Loprox Information:
What is Loprox?
Loprox is an antifungal drug. It works by killing fungus that causes infections. As a gel or cream, it is used to treat ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot, and certain types of yeast infections. As a shampoo, it may be used to treat seborrheic dermatitis (a condition that affects the scalp).
How do I take Loprox?
If you are using the Loprox gel or cream, clean and pat dry the affected area, and apply a thin layer of the medication. If you are using the shampoo, wet your hair first, and rub about one to two teaspoons of the medication into your scalp. Let the shampoo sit on your scalp for three minutes before rinsing it out. Only use the Loprox drug as often as your doctor has instructed you to; using it more frequently or in larger doses will not help kill the fungus faster.
Before taking Loprox, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this drug, or you have any other known allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have diabetes
- You have a seizure disorder, such as epilepsy
- You have a weakened immune system
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Loprox?
The Loprox drug may cause some mild skin irritation, burning, or redness. If you have any kind of skin irritation—including blistering or swelling-- that lasts a long time or gets worse, stop using Loprox and contact your doctor. Get emergency medical help right away if you experience severe allergic reaction symptoms, including facial swelling, rash, lightheadedness, and difficulty breathing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Loprox?
Apply the missed dose of Loprox as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and get back to your normal routine. Do not double your dose in an effort to catch up.
How do I store Loprox?
Keep Loprox in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture and high heat. Keep all prescription medications, including Loprox, out of reach of pets and children in your home. If you have the shampoo, use it within eight weeks of opening it, and dispose of any unused medication after it has expired. If you are unsure how to safely dispose of your shampoo, gel, or cream, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Loprox?
It is unlikely that you will overdose on Loprox when applying it topically, although applying a large amount of the medication may increase your likelihood of experiencing skin irritation. Swallowing the Loprox medicine in any of its forms can be dangerous, so call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you or someone in your household has swallowed some of this medication.
Warnings
Keep Loprox out of your eyes, nose, mouth, and vagina. If you do get it in any of these areas, rinse with water immediately. Do not bandage your skin or use other topical medications on the areas you are treating with Loprox unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.
Brand Names
Loprox is a brand name drug; its generic equivalent is ciclopirox. The generic form is typically less expensive than the brand name form, so ask your doctor if ciclopirox will work for your condition. If your doctor decides to prescribe brand name Loprox, remember to get a coupon from HelpRx to reduce the drug’s cost by up to 75%.
