Lithium Information:
What is Lithium?
Lithium is drug therapy that is prescribed to treat and prevent manic episodes in bipolar and manic depressive patients 12 years of age or older. When used as directed, lithium therapy can reduce symptoms like hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment, insomnia, aggression, and anger. Lithium therapy can prevent and lessen the intensity if manic episodes by regulating abnormal neurotransmitter signals in the brain found in bipolar and manic depression patients.
How do I take Lithium?
Depending on your diagnosis and clinical profile, lithium capsules should be taken three to four times a week. It is important to take lithium around the same time daily and to never crush or chew tablets. Follow the directions instructed by your doctor and pharmacist to receive the maximum benefits of lithium therapy.
Before taking lithium, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking diuretics
- You are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen
- You have kidney disease
- You have heart disease
- You are planning to have surgery
- You are taking other medications for mental health
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
What are the possible side effects of taking Lithium?
Some of the possible side effects patients may experience while taking lithium include restlessness, loss of appetite, severe stomach pain, gas and indigestion, constipation, weight gain, dry mouth, itching, and joint or muscle pain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Lithium?
If you forget to take a dose of lithium, skip it and take the next scheduled dose. It is important to not double up on lithium to make up a missed dose as it may cause severe side effects in some patients.
How do I store Lithium?
Store lithium capsules in room with a temperature between 59-86°F, away from moisture and natural light. Keep lithium capsules out of reach of children in a safe storage compartment.
What happens if I overdose on Lithium?
The early signs of a toxic lithium drug overdose manifest into symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, muscular weakness, and lack of coordination. If you believe you or someone else has overdosed on lithium, call emergency services at 911 or Poison Control at 1 (800) 222-1222.
Warnings
Lithium therapy should not be administered to patients with a history or risk for kidney and cardiovascular disease. Patients with such conditions are at high risk for lithium toxicity, and may suffer severe debilitation or dehydration, or sodium depletion.
