Levorphanol Information:
What is levorphanol?
Levorphanol is an opioid analgesic prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain; it may also be prescribed to treat diarrhea or other conditions. It works by affecting the areas of the brain that detect pain and by helping the intestines increase their water absorption rate.
How do I take levorphanol?
The levorphanol drug is dispensed in tablet form and taken orally with water and without regard to food. It may be taken on an as-needed basis every 4 hours, or it may be administered on a dosing schedule. Your doctor will determine the best regimen. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Follow the dosing instructions exactly and do not take more than the prescribed amount. Because of the potential for tolerance development or abuse, maintaining a record of all doses taken is highly recommended.
Before taking levorphanol, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to levorphanol, opioids, or any of the ingredients in the levorphanol tablet
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking any pain relievers (including NSAIDs), other opioid medications, medications for coughs, allergies, or colds, or antidepressants
- You are taking tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or sedatives
- You have, or have had, heart, lung, thyroid, liver, or kidney disease, urinary problems, or prostatic hypertrophy
- You have a history of alcohol abuse or alcoholism
What are the possible side effects of taking levorphanol?
Mild side effects known to accompany levorphanol include constipation, urination problems, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, mild rash, stomach pain, upset stomach, and vomiting. If you experience any of these and they persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention may also appear. These include signs of an allergic reaction and fainting.
What if I forget to take a dose of levorphanol?
If you are taking levorphanol on an as-needed basis, then missing a dose is unlikely. If you are on a dosing schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember and are able to take it, unless it is almost time for the next one. In this case, skip the missed one and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the frequency of dosing to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store levorphanol?
Keep levorphanol in a secure location away from extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Bathroom storage is not recommended. Because of its potential for abuse, maintain a record of all tablets taken. Dispose of expired or unused tablets according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on levorphanol?
If an overdose of levorphanol has occurred, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose can include extreme drowsiness, dilated pupils, slowed or difficult breathing, slurred speech, balance problems, and disorientation.
Warnings
Levorphanol can make you drowsy; do not drive or operate heavy machinery until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Alcohol can exacerbate the side effects of the levorphanol drug. This medication has a high potential for abuse.
