Glipizide Information:

What is glipizide?

Glipizide is an oral blood-glucose lowering drug in sulfonylureas class of medications and works by causing the pancreas to produce insulin, resulting in lowered blood sugar and the body’s increased ability to efficiently use insulin (a substance produced naturally by the body to break down sugar). Glipizide can decrease the chances for a diabetic patient to have a heart attack, stroke, develop kidney failure, nerve damage, loss of vision or gum disease. Glipizide is available in 5mg or 10mg tablets and, while it does not cure diabetes, it does help to control the symptoms and potential long-term damage which may result from unmanaged care.

How do I take glipizide?

Purchase glipizide at your local pharmacy using our free glipizide coupon or discount card. Glipizide is available in regular tablet form and in extended-release tablets, both of which are taken by mouth. The regular tablet is typically dosed one or more times per day and is effective when taken approximately 30 minutes before breakfast or other meals. The extended tablet is typically taken once per day with breakfast. Your particular dose will be different than for other patients and is based on your doctor’s assessment of your physical health, diabetic needs, and tolerance. You should not chew, crush or divide your glipizide tablets; take them whole and with a glass of water. You should follow the directions your doctor provided; however, you should discuss any questions you may have with your healthcare provider or your pharmacist.

The majority of patients begin with a low dose of the glipizide drug. Doses or frequency of doses can be increased by your doctor, if needed. After you have taken the glipizide drug for a period, its efficacy may wane and your doctor may adjust your medication as needed to provide you the best treatment. Be certain to discuss with your doctor any side effects or any changes in how you feel while taking glipizide. Do not stop taking glipizide if you begin to feel better or without talking to your doctor.

Before taking glipizide, tell your doctor if:

  • You have diabetic ketoacidosis
  • You have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • You have heart disease
  • You have kidney disease
  • You have liver disease
  • You have porphyria
  • You have a severe infection or injury
  • You have thyroid disease
  • You have had an unusual reaction to glipizide, sulfa drugs, other medications, foods, dyes or preservatives
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant
  • You are breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking glipizide?

If, after taking glipizide, you experience discomfort or have questions about your body’s reaction, you should contact your doctor. Your doctor will administer the simple blood test called the HbA1C every 3 to 6 months, which measures your blood sugar control over the past 2 to 3 months. In between these tests, you should learn to check your blood sugar and learn the symptoms of high and low blood sugar as well as how to manage them. As a diabetic, you should always carry a source of sugar with you. Possible glipizide side effects include low blood sugar, and your circle of individuals should be aware of your condition and how to administer aid to you, should an emergency arise. Symptoms of serious side effects include seizures or unconsciousness and, in the event of such emergency, 911 should be called for immediate medical treatment. You should discuss with your doctor if you have high blood pressure, as they may decide to change the dose of your medication. Do not skip meals while taking glipizide.  You should avoid alcohol and many non-prescription cough and cold products, as they contain sugar and can affect your blood sugar levels. Glipizide may increase your sensitivity to the sun, so you should wear protective clothing, use sunscreen, and avoid sun lamps or tanning eds.

What if I forget to take a dose of glipizide?

If you miss a dose of glipizide, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

How do I store glipizide?

Keep glipizide in an airtight container away from children and pets. Protect your medication from excessive heat and moisture.

What happens if I overdose on glipizide?

If you have overdosed on glipizide, you should contact your poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of glipizide overdose may include: shakiness, fast heartbeat, sweating, and loss of consciousness. If the patient is unconscious, call 911 for immediate medical treatment.

Warnings

Keeping your doctor appointments and regularly monitoring your blood sugar is vital to your continued health. Do not drink alcohol while taking glipizide, as alcohol may cause severe low blood sugar. It is important that your circle of support be aware of your medical needs and how to handle any emergencies which may arise. If travelling, you should keep your recent prescription and medical history with you, including your dosing schedule should you be unable to communicate. Glipizide drug side effects can include hypoglycemia and delaying or missing a meal or snack may increase your risks. It is important that you learn the symptoms of low blood sugar so that you can treat it quickly. Symptoms of low blood sugar include anxiety, changes in behavior, blurred vision, cold sweats, confusion, difficulty thinking, drowsiness, excessive hunger, fast heartbeat, nervousness, shakiness, or unusual tiredness or weakness. If you experience symptoms of low blood sugar, you should eat glucose tablets or gel, corn syrup, honey or sugar cubes, drink fruit juice or sugar dissolved in water.
