Dexedrine Information:
What is Dexedrine?
Dexedrine is an amphetamine drug and a central nervous system stimulant prescribed to treat ADHD and to help people with narcolepsy to stay awake during appropriate times of the day. Dexedrine is older than Adderall, and has a slightly higher potential for abuse because it contains only dextroamphetamine.
How do I take Dexedrine?
The brand Dexedrine is now only available in the form of Dexedrine Spansule, which is an extended release capsule. Extended release capsules have a mechanism which allows the medication to be slowly released over an extended period of time. Dexedrine should be taken once or twice daily depending on your condition. The first dose is normally taken before breakfast. Do not take this medication before bedtime. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Spansule® capsules should not be crushed, broken or chewed. They should be swallowed whole.
Before taking Dexedrine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dexedrine.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially L-glutamine, alpha blockers, antacids, antidepressants, beta blockers, diuretics and seizure medications.
- You have glaucoma.
- You have hyperthyroidism.
- You have anxiety or high levels of tension.
- You have an irregular heartbeat, heart defect, heart disease or any other heart problems.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have or have ever had a mental or mood disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, or Tourette’s syndrome.
- You have or have ever had seizures.
What are the possible side effects of taking Dexedrine?
Possible side effects from taking Dexedrine include loss of appetite, diarrhea, headache, tremors, dry mouth, restlessness, changes in libido and difficulty sleeping. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious side effects that you should address with your doctor or a medical professional immediately include fast or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, seizures, negative mood changes, hallucinations, changes in vision, verbal tics (uncontrollably repeating words), fatigue, dizziness, fainting, unusual behavior, chest pain, shortness of breath, slow speech, and weakness or numb sensation on one side of the body.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dexedrine?
If you miss a dose of Dexedrine and you are still within a couple of hours after your missed dose, take your missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you’re a couple of hours away from your next dose, or if it is late afternoon or a few hours from bedtime, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal routine. Never take a double dose of Dexedrine to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Dexedrine?
Store Dexedrine tightly closed in its container at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Dexedrine?
Symptoms of Dexedrine drug overdose include severe mental or mood changes including restlessness, seizures, severe headache and fast breathing. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Dexedrine, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe, seek medical attention immediately.
Warnings
