Daytrana Information:
What is Daytrana?
Daytrana is a drug prescribed for treating ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It is a central nervous stimulant of the amphetamine class of drugs. Daytrana is available in dosage strengths of 10, 15, 20, and 30mg, and is administered through a transdermal patch applied to the skin. It works by affecting chemicals in the nerves and brain in order to help decrease hyperactivity and improve concentration. It is available only with a prescription.
How do I take Daytrana?
Daytrana is a transdermal patch that is applied to the skin. To apply, clean the application site, removing dirt, oil, and powder. Carefully remove the patch containing the Daytrana drug from its package, with the protective liner facing you; remove half of the protective liner to expose the adhesive and press it firmly onto the skin. Once adhered, hold it in place with one hand while removing the remaining half of the protective liner. Press firmly and smooth the patch to make sure it is completely attached. Dispose of the empty packaging. Wash your hands thoroughly both before and after the patch is applied.
Before taking Daytrana, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to methylphenidate or the adhesive on the Daytrana patch
- You are allergic to any medications
- If you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have recently taken, MAO inhibitors, anticoagulants, SSRIs, or medications for hypertension
- You are taking medications to control seizures, taking antidepressants, or using topical steroid medications
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You have arrhythmia or tachycardia, hypertension, hardening of the arteries, or other heart problems or disease
- You, or a family member, has Tourette’s Syndrome, or motor or verbal tics
- You have depression or anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, seizures, or mental illness
- You have circulation problems, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or other skin disorder
What are the possible side effects of taking Daytrana?

Less severe side effects include skin irritation at the application site, loss of appetite or weight loss, stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, or sleep difficulties. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Daytrana patient assistance.
Severe side effects may result from using the Daytrana drug. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following: aggression, delusions or hallucinations, blurring or other vision changes, chest pain, depression, frequent or painful erections or an erection lasting more than four hours, paranoia, dizziness, or fatigue. Other severe side effects include arrhythmia, tachycardia, body tics or tremors, seizures, signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue), swelling or blistering at the application site, sudden appearance of injuries or wounds on the toes or fingers.
What if I forget to take a dose of Daytrana?
If you forget to apply the Daytrana patch, do so as soon as you remember and are able, then resume the normal application schedule. Do not apply multiple patches to compensate for the one missed.
How do I store Daytrana?
Keep Daytrana in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of expired or unused patches by folding them in half, adhesive sides facing each other to seal. Flush patches down the toilet or place them in a sealed container that cannot be opened by children or pets.
What happens if I overdose on Daytrana?
If multiple patches have been applied, remove them, clean the skin, and contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Daytrana patient assistance. Symptoms of an overdose include dilated pupils, vomiting, agitation, tremors, seizures, euphoria, tachycardia or arrhythmia, confusion, sweating, hallucinations, fever, or headaches.
