Strattera Information:
What is Strattera?
Strattera, or atomoxetine HCl, is a medication used to treat ADHD. This medication is different from Adderall and other ADHD drugs because it is not an amphetamine. It is an NRI or norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that works by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the brain to increase attention span and focus with a lower risk of abuse and dependence than amphetamine-based ADHD medications. Unlike most ADHD drugs, Strattera is not classified on the DEA’s schedules of controlled substances.
How do I take Strattera?
Use patient assistance from Lilly Cares or free Strattera coupons and discount cards from HelpRx when you fill your prescription. Strattera comes as a capsule to be taken orally. The typical recommended dosage for Strattera is 40mg per day. Your doctor may increase your dosage over time. Those weighing less than 150 lbs will be prescribed lower doses. This medication may be taken daily with or without food in the mornings, or it may be divided into a morning dose and afternoon dose. Follow instructions provided by your doctor. Do not crush, chew, or break Strattera capsules. Swallow them whole. If a capsule breaks, any spilt powder should be washed away immediately. If this medication gets in your eyes, rinse thoroughly and call your doctor. This medication should be used along with cognitive behavioral therapy as it is not a cure for ADHD.
Before taking Strattera, tell your doctor if:
- You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse or dependence.
- You have heart disease, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or any other heart or blood vessel problems.
- You or someone in your family has a history of mental illness such as mania, bipolar disorder, depression, or Tourette’s syndrome.
- You experience seizures or motor tics.
- You have ever had a stroke.
- You are allergic to atomoxetine or any of the ingredients in Strattera.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have glaucoma.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, cold or allergy medications, medications for hypertension, and asthma medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking Strattera?
Possible side effects from Strattera include decreased libido, indigestion, loss of appetite, decreased urination, a change in menstruation, irritability, nausea, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, and constipation. If you experience irregular heartbeat, chest pain, painful erection, hallucinations, shortness of breath, suicidal thoughts, or a negative change in mood, contact your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of Strattera?
If you forget a dose of Strattera, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one. You may also want to skip a missed dose if it is too close to bedtime. This medication may keep you awake.
How do I store Strattera?
