What is Chlorpropamide?

 

Chlorpropamide is a generic drug in the sulfonylureas class of drugs and it is used to treat type 2 diabetes. This medication is typically used along with a diet and exercise program to help to control type 2 diabetes.

 

Chlorpropamide comes in tablet form and it works by lowered blood sugar levels in the body. It does this by making the pancreas produce insulin and promoting the body’s efficient use of insulin.

 

This drug is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How do I use Chlorpropamide?

 

Chlorpropamide tablets are to be taken orally and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken with breakfast one time per day. Follow your doctor’s directions for taking this medication.

Before using Chlorpropamide, tell your doctor if:

 
  • you are allergic to Chlorpropamide or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have or have ever had G6PD deficiency

  • you have hormone disorders involving the adrenal, pituitary, or thyroid gland

  • you have heart, kidney, or liver disease

  • If you are having surgery of any kind, tell your doctor that you are taking this medication.

  • If you are 65 years of age or older, consult with your doctor about the risks of taking this medication, as this medication is not as safe or effective as other medications that can be used to treat the same condition.

  • This medication may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing while using this medication.

  • Alcohol may make the side effects of this medication worse.

  • Consuming alcohol while taking this medication may cause the following symptoms:

    • headache

    • nausea or vomiting

    • flushing

    • chest pain

    • choking

    • difficulty breathing

    • anxiety

    • weakness

    • blurred vision

What are the possible side effects of using Chlorpropamide?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • nausea or vomiting

  • hunger or loss of appetite

  • headache or dizziness

  • itching

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • light-colored stools or diarrhea

  • dark urine

  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach

  • unusual bruising or bleeding

  • sore throat

  • fever

  • rash

What if I forget to use a dose of Chlorpropamide?

 

Take your missed dose of Chlorpropamide as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Chlorpropamide?

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Chlorpropamide?

 

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

 

Symptoms of overdose on Chlorpropamide include:

 
  • loss of consciousness

  • seizures
