Camrese Information:

What is Camrese?

Camrese is an oral contraceptive that contains ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and levonorgestrel (progestogen). This is an extended-cycle birth control that is taken in three month increments. This means that you will only get your period once every 3 months. Camrese works by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus to reduce the likelihood of sperm penetration. It also changes the endometrium to make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to implant.

How do I take Camrese?

Camrese comes in a set of 91 pills, a three-month supply. Pick a time of the day when it is convenient for you to remember to take your birth control. Start taking Camrese on the first Sunday after your period at this time. If you aren’t switching over from another birth control, you will need to use back-up contraception for 7 days. Continue taking one pill per day at the same time every day in order until your finish the first 84 pills. After that you will start taking the estrogen only pills and you should have your period. After you finish the estrogen-only pills, you should start a new pack, whether you had your period or not. If you missed your period, talk to your doctor about what to do.

Before taking Camrese, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any foods or medications that you know of.
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, especially other birth control pills, ACE inhibitors and other blood pressure medications, NSAIDs, diuretics, antifungals, anticoagulants or ‘blood thinners’, oral steroids, and thyroid medications.
  • You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially St. John’s wort, potassium or vitamin C.
  • You have ever had any blood clots or if you’ve ever experienced a stroke or embolism.
  • You have cerebrovascular disease.
  • You have coronary artery disease or heart disease.
  • You have diabetes that affects your circulation.
  • You’ve ever had breast cancer or any other cancers of the reproductive system.
  • You’ve had liver cancer, jaundice or liver disease.
  • You’ve experienced abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • You have adrenal insufficiency or kidney disease.
  • You’ve ever had an abnormal mammogram or any kind of breast disease.
  • You have asthma, depression or migraine headaches.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Camrese?

Possible side effects from taking Camrese include nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, weight changes, and spotting. These side effects should lessen after the first few months of use. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, report them to your doctor. Other more serious side effect that you should address immediately include negative mood changes, breast lumps, severe abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding or missed periods, jaundice, and elevated blood pressure. Birth control pills such as Camrese can raise your risk of developing blood clots. If you experience chest pain, jaw or left arm pain, confusion, dizziness, pain or swelling the groin or calves, slurred speech, shortness of breath, migraines, unusual perspiration or weakness on one side of the body, seek medical attention immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Camrese?

If you miss a dose of Camrese, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you miss a full day, take two pills the next day and continue on your regular schedule. If you miss two pills, take two pills on the day you remember and then two the next day. If you miss two pills in a row, you should use back up birth control for 7 days. If you miss more than two pills, skip them and continue to take one per day until you finish the pack. Use back-up birth control for 7 days.

How do I store Camrese?

Camrese should be stored in its original packaging so you remember the order in which to take your pills. Store the pills at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your pills out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Camrese?

There have been no reports of serious effects from Camrese overdose. Overuse of birth control pills can result in increased vaginal bleeding. If someone has accidentally ingested several pills, consult the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
