What is Camila?
Camila is a brand name, progestin-only oral contraceptive (or birth control pill) that is used to prevent pregnancy. Camila contains progestin, a female hormone, and this medication works by preventing ovulation from occurring. It also works by causing changes to the uterine lining and cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
How do I use Camila?
Follow all directions on your prescription label carefully and take Camila tablets exactly as directed by your doctor.
Camila comes in packs of 28 pills. Take the first pill on the first day of your period, and continue to take one pill daily at the same time every day. When the pack of pills runs out, start a new pack.
This medication is safe for use by breastfeeding mothers.
Before using Camila , tell your doctor if:
- you are allergic to progestins, aspirin, or any other medications
- you are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements
- you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant, or breastfeeding
- you have or have ever had breast lumps, breast cancer, or vaginal bleeding between periods
- you have or have ever had diabetes
- you have or have ever had liver tumors or liver disease
Additional precautions:
- You should not smoke while using this medication, as using tobacco products while taking Camila may increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
What are the possible side effects of using Camila?
Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:
- irregular menstrual periods
- headache or dizziness
- breast pain
- upset stomach
- acne
- increased hair growth
Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:
- bleeding that lasts a long time
- lack of menstrual periods
- severe stomach pain
What if I forgot to use a dose of Camila?
Take the missed dose of Camila as soon as you remember it, and return to taking Camila at the same time you usually take it. If you take a dose of Camila more than 3 hours late, be sure to use a backup method of birth control for the next 48 hours. If you are not sure what to do about the pills you have missed, keep taking Camila and use a backup method of birth control, and consult with your doctor.
How do I store Camila?
Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and from pets.
What happens if I overdose on Camila?
In the case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention or call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.
Warnings
- Do not let anyone else use your medication.
- Do not take this medicine if you smoke. Smoking can greatly increase your risk of stroke, or heart attack. The risks increase the older you are and the more you smoke.
Camila will not provide protection against the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]) and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Is Camila a Brand or Generic drug?
Camila is a brand name drug, and the Camila generic name is progestin-only oral contraceptive. Other similar brand name drugs include Errin, Heather, Jolivette, Micronor, and Norethidone. These drugs are not all the same, so consult with your doctor to determine which treatment is best for you.
