Buprenorphine Information:

What is buprenorphine?

Classified as a partial opioid medication, the buprenorphine drug has various pain management uses, and may be used to treat opioid dependence under a doctor’s supervision. Because of the abuse potential, buprenorphine can only be administered in a controlled setting for those seeking relief from an opioid dependence. As buprenorphine is an opioid partial antagonist, the effects of euphoria and respiratory depression are weaker than full opioids. Because of this, buprenorphine diminishes the effects of physical dependency to opioids, withdrawal symptoms, and cravings. However, these effects also help in alleviation of moderate to severe pain.

How do I take buprenorphine?

Follow the medication guide provided by your pharmacist or doctor before using buprenorphine. The sublingual form of the medication is typically taken once daily, but follow the instructions of your doctor. Place the medication under your tongue for about 5-10 minutes, or until it dissolves completely. If your doctor has instructed you to take more than one tablet daily, you can put multiple tablets under your tongue at once. Do not swallow or chew the buprenorphine pills, as the medication will not work as well. Use the medication regularly, as directed. If you have questioning concerning the administration of buprenorphine, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Before taking buprenorphine, tell your doctor if:

You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
You are taking any other medications (prescription and nonprescription), herbal preparations, or dietary supplements
You have any allergies
You have a history of a recent head injury or growths in the brain (such as tumors)
You have any muscle problems
You have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, or if you are physically dependent on narcotic medications (i.e. morphine) or other opiates (i.e. heroin)
You have a history of mental or mood problems
You have a history of blood or electrolyte problems, stomach problems or gallbladder problems, liver or kidney problems, an enlarged prostate gland, trouble urinating, breathing or lung problems, underactive thyroid, adrenal gland problems, or a blockage of your bladder or urethra

What are the possible side effects of taking of buprenorphine?

Some of the most common side effects of buprenorphine include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, sweating, nausea, headache, and vomiting. If any of these side effects persist or become bothersome, contact your doctor. To reduce the risk of dizziness and light-headedness, stand up slowly when rising from sitting or lying down. There are also a number of severe side effects that arise in rare cases, and you should seek medical attention immediately if any of them occur. These side effects include pale stools; redness or swelling at injection site (if receiving injectable form of drug); slow or shallow breathing; fast or irregular heartbeat; unusual weakness; vision changes; yellowing of eyes or skin; anxiety or nervousness; dark urine; or mental or mood changes (i.e. depression).

What if I forget to take a dose of buprenorphine?

It is best to take buprenorphine at the same time every day, as directed by your doctor, to ensure you remember to take it daily. However, if you forget, you can take it any time of day. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take your regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store buprenorphine?

Store buprenorphine in a closed container at room temperature. Store pills away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Contact your pharmacist about the best way to dispose of leftover medicine safely.

What happens if I overdose on buprenorphine?

If you suspect that yourself or someone you know has overdosed on the buprenorphine drug, contact a poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 or call 911. Symptoms of an overdose may include, but are not limited to, slow breathing, loss of consciousness, and slow heartbeat.

Warnings

Do not take any depressants, such as benzodiazepines, or alcohol while taking buprenorphine. As buprenorphine may make you dizzy or drowsy, do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness for safe completion.
