What is Axert?

Axert is a triptan medication prescribed to treat symptoms of migraines with or without auras. This medication is thought to work by constricting blood vessels in the brain that become dilated during a migraine attack and inhibits the release of neuropeptides that cause inflammation.

• How

How do I take Axert?

Axert medicine is prescribed in 6.25 or 12.5mg doses. 12.5mg are generally prescribed for adults. This medication is taken on an as-needed basis. Take one dose of Axert at the first sign of a migraine headache. If your headache persists, you can take one more tablet after 2 hours. Do not take more than 25mg in a 24 hour period.

• Precautions

Before taking Axert, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredient in Axert or any other medications.
• You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs or herbal supplements, especially NSAIDs, Tylenol, aspirin, SSRIs or SNRIs, antidepressant medications, anxiety medications, antifungal medications, ergot medications, MAOIs and any other migraine medications or triptans.
• You currently smoke.
• You have or have ever had heart disease or a heart attack.
• You have chest pain or irregular heartbeats.
• You have had a stroke or any circulation or clotting problems.
• You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
• You have kidney or liver disease.
• You have diabetes.
• You have gone through menopause.
• You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Axert?

Possible Axert side effects include upset stomach, nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth, elevated blood pressure and dizziness. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects are persistent or severe. Other more serious but less common side effects include chest pain, left arm pain, fainting, confusion, slurred speech, severe abdominal pain, bloody stools, changes in urination, rapid or irregular heartbeat, vision changes, blue fingers, toes or nails, hearing changes and allergic reaction. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Axert?

This medication is taken as needed. 

• Storage

How do I store Axert?

Store Axert in a tightly closed container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Axert?

Accidental overdose on Axert is not likely. Signs of overdose include high blood pressure that could lead to serious cardiovascular symptoms. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Axert, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe or the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.

Warnings

This medication can raise your blood pressure. You should check your blood pressure regularly when taking Axert. This medicine can also make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking Axert. If taking this drug along with other drugs that increase serotonin, your risk of serotonin syndrome increases. Signs of serotonin syndrome include hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, loss of coordination, fever, dizziness, severe nausea and vomiting and twitching.
 

Brand Names

There are currently no generics and no other brand names for this drug on the market, but there are other triptans available in brand name and generic forms such as Imitrex/sumatriptan.
