Amerge Information:
What is Amerge?
Amerge is the drug naratriptan, a selective serotonin receptor agonist (SSRA) prescribed to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches. It stops the release of substances that cause the symptoms of migraines, stops pain signals to the brain, and narrows blood vessels around the brain. Amerge does not reduce the number of migraine attacks or prevent migraines from occurring, nor is it prescribed to treat hemiplegic or basilar migraines, cluster headaches, or other types of headaches.
How do I take Amerge?
Amerge is administered in tablet form and taken orally with water at the first sign of a migraine headache. If the symptoms improve after taking the Amerge medicine, but return after four hours or longer, another dose may be taken; your doctor will limit the number of tablets that can be taken in a 24-hour period. If symptoms do not improve after taking the initial dose of the medication, contact your doctor. Do not take more than is prescribed.
Before taking Amerge, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to naratriptan or any of the ingredients in the Amerge medicine
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking acetaminophen, aspirin, or any NSAIDs
- You are taking antidepressants, oral contraceptives, SSRIs, or SNRIs
- You have taken, or stopped taking, in the previous two weeks tranylcypromine, selegiline, phenelzine, or isocarboxazid
- You have taken in the last 24 hours any SSRA, or ergot-type medications
- You have, or have had, angina, arrhythmia, blood clots, circulation problems, diabetes, high cholesterol, ischemic bowel disease, hypertension, kidney or liver disease, Raynaud's disease, or a stroke or 'mini-stroke'
- You have gone through menopause or you smoke.
What are the possible side effects of taking Amerge?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Amerge. Mild symptoms include dizziness, feeling warm or cold, nausea, tiredness, nausea, or weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing); bloody diarrhea; cold sweats; constipation; lightheadedness; painful, burning, or tingling hands or feet; pale or blue fingers or toes; tachycardia or arrhythmia; shortness of breath; speech difficulties; sudden or severe stomach pain; tightness, pain, pressure, or heaviness in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw; vomiting; or weakened or numb arm or leg.
What if I forget to take a dose of Amerge?
Amerge is taken on an as needed basis, at the first signs of a migraine headache.
How do I store Amerge?
Keep Amerge tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Amerge?
If an overdose of the Amerge drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include chest pain, lightheadedness, loss of coordination, neck pain, or fatigue.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Amerge. This medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Taking Amerge for longer than prescribed can cause migraines to worsen or increase in frequency. This medication should not be taken more than ten days per month. Contact your doctor if you have more than four migraine headaches in a month.
