What is Avandamet?
Avandamet is a combination of two oral diabetes medications, rosiglitazone and metformin, that is prescribed along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in those with Type 2 diabetes. Rosiglitazone helps increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Metformin decreases the amount of glucose produced by the liver and the amount absorbed by the blood; it also increases the body’s response to insulin. Avandamet is not for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
How do I take Avandamet?
Avandamet is administered in tablet form and taken orally with water; it may be taken with food in order to decrease nausea. The dosage strength and the frequency of dosing will be determined by your doctor. Follow the instructions that accompany the prescription exactly and ask your doctor for Avandamet patient assistance if you have any questions about this medication. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or bite the pill. You doctor may recommend changes to your diet and exercise regimen. Avandamet will not cure Type 2 diabetes; continue to take it even if you feel well.
Before taking Avandamet, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to rosiglitazone, metformin, or any of the ingredients in the Avandamet drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking digoxin, furosemide, gemfibrozil, insulin, isoniazid, morphine, niacin, phenytoin, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, ranitidine, rifampin, topiramate, triamterene, trimethoprim, vancomycin, or zonisamide
- You are taking ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, oral steroids, or medications for asthma, colds, or nausea
- You are taking medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure, prevention of a heart attack or stroke, treating a mental illness, or thyroid disease
- You have, or have had, congestive heart failure, a heart attack, a heart defect, heart disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, tachycardia, or sleep apnea
- You have, or have had, diabetic ketoacidosis, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, or thyroid, kidney or liver disease
- You are having surgery, including dental, or an x-ray procedure requiring the injection of a dye.
What are the possible side effects of taking Avandamet?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Avandamet. Less severe symptoms include back pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flushing of the skin, gas, headache, heartburn, indigestion, muscle pain, nail changes; cold symptoms, including a runny nose; sore throat, stomach pain, or a metallic taste in the mouth. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Avandamet patient assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, fever, hoarseness, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing); arrhythmia; breaking out in a cold sweat; changes in vision or vision loss; chest pain; darkened urine; dizziness; extreme fatigue or tiredness; lactic acidosis; lightheadedness; loss of appetite; nausea; pain in the jaw, arm, back, neck, or stomach; pale skin; symptoms of jaundice; tachycardia; vomiting; a need to sleep with extra pillows to facilitate breathing; confusion; dry cough or wheezing; problems walking or exercising.
What if I forget to take a dose of Avandamet?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Avandamet, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or modify the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Avandamet?
Keep the Avandamet drug tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Avandamet?
If an overdose of Avandamet is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include symptoms of hypoglycemia.
Warnings
The medications in Avandamet may cause or worsen congestive heart failure or cause lactic acidosis. This medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Avandamet may increase the risk of pregnancy. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
