Tinidazole Information:
What is tinidazole?
Tinidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. It may be prescribed to treat bacterial vaginal infections or trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite. It may also be used to treat giardiasis or amebiasis, both types of parasitic infections. It works by killing the protozoa or bacteria causing the infection.
How do I take tinidazole?
Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully when taking tinidazole; misuse of antibiotics can sometimes cause infections to become more resistant to medication. Most people who need the tinidazole drug will be instructed to take it once daily with food for two to five days (although some infections are treated with just one dose). Tablets should be taken at the same time every day to keep the amount of medicine in the body consistent.
Before taking tinidazole, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or metronidazole (Flagyl)
- You have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs
- You have a seizure disorder
- You have a blood cell disorder
- You have kidney disease or are on dialysis
- You have liver disease
- You have an untreated fungal or yeast infection
- You have a weakened immune system
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking tinidazole?
Tinidazole may cause your tongue or urine to darken, but these side effects are harmless and temporary. Other mild side effects can include upset stomach, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, unusual taste in mouth, loss of appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, or vaginal discharge. Call your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including severe dizziness, an irregular heart rate, coordination problems, numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, seizures, or signs of a new infection.
What if I forget to take a dose of tinidazole?
It’s important to take tinidazole at the same time every day, but if you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose when you remember, skip the missed dose. Never take two doses at once.
How do I store tinidazole?
Store tinidazole in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Don’t keep it in the bathroom, since heat and moisture can negatively affect it. As with all prescription drugs, store it somewhere that children and pets can’t access.
What happens if I overdose on tinidazole?
The effects of an overdose on tinidazole are unknown. If you suspect that you or someone in your home has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Don’t drink alcohol during or for up to three days after a course of treatment with tinidazole. Alcohol can interact with this drug and cause adverse effects such as a rapid heart rate and severe nausea. Do not use tinidazole if you are in the first trimester of a pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, you will need to stop nursing your child during your course of treatment. You can begin breastfeeding again three days after your last dose.
