Spectracef Information:
What is Spectracef?
Spectracef is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections, including infections that can lead to pneumonia, tonsillitis, and bronchitis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
How do I take Spectracef?
Take Spectracef with food and plenty of water to improve its absorption rate and reduce the risk of an upset stomach. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully. Spectracef is most effective when taken at evenly spaced intervals so that the level of medicine in your body remains consistent. Continue taking this medication for the entire prescribed treatment period, even if you see improvement before then. Stopping a course of antibiotics too soon may allow your infection to return and become more resistant to medicine.
Before taking Spectracef, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin
- You have a milk protein allergy
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a carnitine deficiency
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You are malnourished
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Spectracef?
The most common side effects of this antibiotic include upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vomiting. If any of these side effects persist or get worse, tell your doctor. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unlikely but serious side effects, including watery or bloody diarrhea, muscle weakness, swollen feet or ankles, jaundice, increased thirst, changes in amount of urine, unusual bruising or bleeding, an irregular heart rate, unusual mood changes, signs of a new infection, or seizures.
What if I forget to take a dose of Spectracef?
It is important to take Spectracef on a regular schedule, but if you do forget a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule.
How do I store Spectracef?
Store Spectracef in a dry space at room temperature. Keep this medication in a tightly sealed container, out of reach of any children or pets in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Spectracef?
Overdosing on Spectracef may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and certain other adverse effects. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
Don’t use any anti-diarrheal medications while taking Spectracef without first talking to your doctor. Contact your doctor if you have persistent diarrhea after using this antibiotic; this may be a sign of a rare but serious infection.
