What is Cipro?

Cipro is an antibiotic quinolone medication, used to treat bacterial infections. Cipro uses include treating bladder and urinary tract infections, bacterial STDs, sinus and respiratory illnesses caused by bacteria, typhoid, diverticulitis, pneumonia, salmonella, cholera, peritonitis, kidney infections, and others; it is not effective in treating viral infections. It is also prescribed to treat inhaled anthrax infections. It is available in several forms, with the most common being an oral suspension or tablet.

How do I take Cipro?

Do not drink or consume dairy products when taking the medication; however, if it is being taken with a meal, then dairy may be allowed. Consult your physician for advice. If you have been prescribed the oral suspension, shake it thoroughly and use a properly gauged spoon for dispensing. The frequency of administration will depend on the medical profile and needs of the patient; do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Before taking Cipro, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ciprofloxacin, or anything in the medication;
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements, including over-the-counter pain medication, calcium tablets, or antacids;
  • You are allergic to fluoroquinolone or quinolone;
  • You are being treated for arrhythmia or any cardiovascular condition;
  • You are being treated for urinary tract infections;

What are the possible side effects of taking Cipro?

Some patients have reported side effects as a result of taking Cipro. Less severe symptoms include headaches; need for frequent urination; gastro-intestinal problems such as stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting; vaginal discharge or itching; and heartburn. If you exhibit any of these and they persist or worsen, contact your physician.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include anxiety; nervousness or agitation; sleep difficulties; dizziness; arrhythmia; hallucinations (visual or aural); tremors; tendinitis; changes in urine color; depression; paranoia; symptoms of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat; difficulty swallowing or breathing); thoughts of suicide; and ruptured tendons.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cipro?

If you forget to take the regularly scheduled dose of your Cipro medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one, and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses of the Cipro drug to make up for a missed one. Do not take more than two doses of the tablet or suspension in a twenty-four hour period.
