Solodyn Information:
What is Solodyn?
Solodyn is a prescription medicine in the tetracycline antibiotic class. As an antibiotic, it should only be used to treat acne that is likely to be caused by bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria causing the infection, ultimately reducing the red and inflamed appearance of acne. While many acne medications are topical, Solodyn comes as an extended release tablet.
How do I take Solodyn?
Take Solodyn at even intervals to keep the level of medication in your body consistent, and only use it for the amount of time that your doctor has prescribed it. Stopping an antibiotic too early can allow a bacterial infection to return, and taking this type of drug for too long can cause it to become less effective. Take each dose with water and with or without food (people with sensitive stomachs should take it with food). Do not crush or chew the extended release tablets, and do not lie down for at least ten minutes after taking a dose.
Before taking Solodyn, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially a penicillin antibiotic
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have difficulty swallowing
- You have esophagus problems, such as acid reflux disease
- You have lupus
- You have asthma
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Solodyn?
Side effects of Solodyn may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, headache, cough, mouth sores, or loss of appetite. If any of these side effects become bothersome, or if you have any other side effects that concern you, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including painful or difficult urination, swollen ankles or feet, shortness of breath, severe stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, vision problems, severe headaches, flu-like symptoms, easy bruising or bleeding, muscle weakness, chest pain, tingling or numbness, or a severe skin reaction.
What if I forget to take a dose of Solodyn?
Take the missed dose immediately when you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the normal time. Do not take more of the Solodyn medicine than you normally would in a single dose.
How do I store Solodyn?
Store Solodyn at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of pets and children.
What happens if I overdose on Solodyn?
Overdosing on Solodyn may cause severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
Solodyn can increase sunlight sensitivity, so avoid tanning beds and extensive sun exposure while using this antibiotic. When you do need to be outside, wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Because this medication can cause dizziness and drowsiness, avoid driving or performing other activities that require clear focus until you know you can do so safely. Limit alcohol consumption, as alcohol can make certain side effects worse. If you are taking hormonal birth control, let your doctor know. Antibiotics can make birth control pills less effective, and you may need to use a backup method of birth control during your course of treatment.
Brand Names
Solodyn is a brand name drug. Its generic equivalent is minocycline ER. The generic form is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if this is an option for you. If your doctor does decide to prescribe brand name Solodyn, use a coupon from HelpRx to reduce the retail cost by up to 75%.
