Macrobid Information:
What is Macrobid?
Macrobid is a nitrofuran antibiotic capsule that is prescribed to treat urinary tract infections; it works by killing bacteria and preventing their growth. It is not effective in treating colds, flu, or other viral infections.
How do I take Macrobid?
Macrobid is prescribed in capsule form and is taken orally two to four times a day for seven days. It should be taken with meals and with a full glass of water or milk. Do not stop taking the Macrobid antibiotic until you have finished all of the capsules in the prescription, even if you are feeling better. Stopping before completing the full prescription may cause the infection to return or the bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic Macrobid, as well as other antibiotics.
Before taking Macrobid, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any ingredients in the Macrobid medication
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, including diphenhydramine, probenecid, antibiotics, trihexyphenidyl, and benztropine
- You are taking antacids containing magnesium trisilicate
- You have, or have had, anemia
- You have, or have had, lung or kidney disease
- You have, or have had, nerve damage
- You have G-6-PD (an inherited blood disease)
- You are 65 or older
What are the possible side effects of taking Macrobid?
Some patients who have taken Macrobid have reported side effects, some more severe than others. The less severe side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and changes in urine color. However, if these persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, mouth, face, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing); chest pain; muscle weakness or excessive fatigue; persistent cough; or fever and chills.
What if I forget to take a dose of Macrobid?
If you miss a scheduled dose of the Macrobid antibiotic, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is close to the time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the one that was missed and resume the regular schedule, maintaining an even spacing between administered doses. Do not take multiple doses of the antibiotic Macrobid to compensate for a missed dose.
How do I store Macrobid?
Keep Macrobid tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of heat and humidity. Dispose of outdated or unused doses according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Macrobid?
If an overdose of Macrobid is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, collapsed, or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
