Levoxyl Information:
What is Levoxyl?
Levoxyl is the brand name for levothyroxine, a synthetic hormone that is identical to the thyroid hormone T4 or thyroxine. It works by increasing thyroid hormone levels when the body isn’t producing enough, or as a replacement for thyroxine when the body has stopped producing it. Thyroxine helps regulate the body’s metabolism and bone growth, among other important functions.
How do I take Levoxyl?
Levoxyl medicine should be taken once daily in the mornings on an empty stomach with a glass of water. It should be taken at least 30 minutes before eating. It can take up to six weeks for Levoxyl to have its desired effects. Most other medication, including antacids and other over-the-counter drugs, should not be taken until four hours after taking Levoxyl. Tell your doctor about all the medications and supplements you are taking.
Before taking Levoxyl, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Levoxyl medicine.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially amiodarone, blood thinners, amphetamines, aspirin, NSAIDs, beta blockers, estrogens or hormonal contraceptives, corticosteroids, diabetes medications, and antidepressants.
- You have diabetes.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have heart or artery disease.
- You have chest pain, high blood pressure, or arrhythmias.
- You have difficulty swallowing.
- You have porphyria.
What are the possible side effects of taking Levoxyl?
Possible Levoxyl drug side effects include hair loss, headache, minor weight changes, mood changes, perspiration and/or feeling warm, diarrhea, upset stomach, and changes in appetite. Most of these side effects should go away over time. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor as soon as possible. These symptoms may be signs that your thyroid hormone levels are too high. Serious but rare side effects that you should report to a doctor immediately include tremors, seizures, chest pain, swelling hands, feet or ankles and fast or irregular heartbeat.
What if I forget to take a dose of Levoxyl?
If you miss a dose of Levoxyl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take a double dose of Levoxyl to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Levoxyl?
Store Levoxyl tightly enclosed in a container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Levoxyl?
Signs of overdose on Levoxyl are symptoms of hyperthyroidism: sweating, rapid heartbeat, shaking, nervousness or anxiety, and feeling overheated in addition to confusion and possibly seizures and coma. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Levoxyl, seek medical attention or call 911 if symptoms are severe.
Warnings
Levoxyl should not be used as a weight loss drug. This medication will not help patients who do not have hypothyroidism to lose weight, and it can be toxic in patients that have normal or high thyroid hormone levels.
