Armour Thyroid Information:
What is Armour Thyroid?
Armour Thyroid (thyroid desiccated) is a hormone replacement therapy derived from dried porcine thyroid. It is used to treat diseases and disorders that prevent the thyroid from producing enough of the hormones (T4and T3) that regulate energy and metabolism in the body. This may involve treating certain kinds of goiters as well as assisting in the diagnosis of thyroid disorders. It is sometimes used in the treatment of thyroid cancers. This medication is not intended to be used to treat obesity or other weight problems.
How do I take Armour Thyroid?
Always take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. As a hormone replacement therapy, too little or too much taken for too short or too long of a time may adversely affect your treatment. Armour Thyroid medicine is usually prescribed as one tablet (often of 60mg) taken by mouth one time daily, preferably at the same time every day.
Before taking Armour Thyroid, tell your doctor if:
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
• You are obese or are otherwise attempting to lose significant amounts of weight.
• You have a thyroid disorder that causes excess hormones.
• You have or have a history of certain adrenal gland disorders.
• You have or have a history of diabetes.
• You have or have a history of any heart problem, disease, or disorder, especially angina, congestive heart failure, or coronary artery disease.
• You are planning to have surgery.
• You currently take any other drugs, medications, supplements, or vitamins, especially antacids, certain cholesterol lowering medications, hormonal birth control, other hormone replacement therapies, oral anti-diabetic medicines, blood thinners, steroids, salicylates (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, Pepto-Bismol), or medications that contain iodine.
What are the possible side effects of taking Armour Thyroid?
Losing hair is a common side effect of taking Armour Thyroid, especially for children. These side effects should lessen over time. However, some side effects require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in the face, lips, tongue, and throat), unusual nervousness or irritability, trouble sleeping, headache, changes in appetite, weight loss, sensitivity to heat, unusual sweating, fever, hand tremors, leg cramps, angina or irregular heartbeats, fast or pounding heartbeats, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea, unusual changes in your menstrual period.
What if I forget to take a dose of Armour Thyroid?
You shouldn't take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
How do I store Armour Thyroid?
Keep Armour Thyroid medicine away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., the bathroom) and store at room temperature. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Armour Thyroid?
Call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance. Signs of thyroid toxicity include: angina, feeling unusually nervous, feeling unusually hot, unusual sweating, fast or pounding heartbeats. Your doctor will likely want to reduce your dosage.
Warnings
Misuse of Armour Thyroid, especially in combination with other medications, may result in adverse or life threatening side effects. When taking Armour Thyroid, always be aware that thyroid toxicity is a risk. Be sure you know the symptoms and contact your doctor immediately.
There are certain prescription and over the counter medications that you should not take either 4 hours before or 4 hours after taking your dose of Armour Thyroid. These include: antacids, cholestyramine, and colestipol. They may interfere with the way your body absorbs your medication.
