What is Humira?

Humira, a drug scientifically known as adalimumab, is a TNF inhibitor medication and an anti-inflammatory drug. It is commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, but it is also used to treat a variety of other autoimmune conditions such as juvenile arthritis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, AS and ulcerative colitis. High levels of TNF, a substance involved in the body’s inflammatory response, are found in patients with various autoimmune diseases. By blocking this substance, Humira is able to moderate the damaging effects inflammation causes in patients with these diseases. Humira’s effect on arthritis is just as rapid as that of methotrexate, and when used in combination with methotrexate, the rate of response is almost double.

How do I take Humira?

Depending on your condition, your doctor may start you out on a couple of consecutive doses called a loading dose before you start your maintenance dose. An adult maintenance dose of Humira is typically 40 mg every other week. Before taking Humira, tell your doctor if:

• You have or have recently had an infection of any kind (fungal, bacterial, viral). Also tell your doctor if you are prone to or at risk of infection.
• You have recently received a live vaccine.
• You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Humira.
• You’ve ever had a disease affecting your nervous system such as MS, cancer, or heart disease.
• You have been or are being treated with light therapy.
• You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially medications that affect the immune system such as corticosteroids, antifolates, TNF inhibitors and other immunosuppressants. 
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Humira?

Common Humira drug side effects include stuffy nose, nausea, headache, mild stomach pain, sinus pain, and redness or irritation at the site of injection. Less common but serious Humira side effects include chest pain, signs of infection, fever, swelling of the feet or ankles, painful urination, numbing or tingling sensations, shortness of breath, continuous cough, pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, jaundice, accelerated heart rate, joint pain, swollen glands, mouth sores, rash or red spots on the cheeks or nose, confusion, and seizures. If you experience any serious, persistent, or unusual side effects from Humira, contact your doctor at once.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Humira?

If you forget to use a dose of Humira, inject the missed dose as soon as you remember, and then continue on your normal schedule. Do not inject extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

• Storage

How do I store Humira?

Humira pens or syringes should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature between 36 and 36 degrees Fahrenheit. It must not be allowed to freeze. Dispose of this medication if it freezes and do not use Humira injections if they have expired. Protect the syringes or pens from light by keeping them in the original cartons until used.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Humira?

There have been no recorded adverse effects or toxicities in Humira doses as great as 10mg per kilogram (680 mg for a 150 pound individual). However, if you or someone you know has taken an excessive amount of Humira, call your local Poison Control Center or go to the hospital so that the patient may be monitored.

Warnings

Immunosuppressive medications like Humira lower some of the body’s natural immune defense mechanisms. Be careful to avoid anyone who is sick and do not get live vaccines unless your doctor tells you to do so. See your doctor at the first sign of any infection.  Your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and hepatitis before prescribing Humira. A few patients, particularly young patients, taking TNF inhibitors have developed lymphoma.

Brand Names
