Dyazide Information:

Dyazide is a combination drug containing triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide. It is primarily used in the treatment of high blood pressure and edema in patients who have low potassium levels which could be dangerous. Edema is a condition which causes fluid retention in body tissues. This class of medication is called a diuretic, or water pill. The pills cause the kidney to flush out any unnecessary water and salt.

High blood pressure is very common, but it can be incredibly dangerous if it is not treated. Untreated high blood pressure can cause damage to vital organs such as the brain, heart, blood vessels, and kidneys, among other parts of the body. This can cause heart disease, heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other serious side effects.

In addition to taking Dyazide, you should consider making lifestyle changes to reduce your blood pressure. This may include a low-fat and low-sodium diet, maintaining or losing weight, exercising for 30 minutes per day, refraining from smoking, and only drinking alcohol in moderation.

Dyazide may also be prescribed for other treatments. If this is the case, acquire more information from your doctor about your condition, symptoms, and dosage.

Dyazide comes in the form of a capsule/tablet, and it should be taken once a day, every day, by mouth. It should be taken around the same time every day, as directed. It is important to follow all directions that come with your prescription. If there is anything you do not understand, ask your doctor before beginning Dyazide.

Take this medication exactly as instructed. Do not take more or less than directed. Do not let anyone else take your medication.

While this medication is used to control high blood pressure and edema, it will not cure either condition. Even if you feel well, you should continue to take Dyazide. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting with your doctor.

Before using Dyazide , tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide, sulfonamide-derived medications ('sulfa drugs'), any other medications, or any ingredients in triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide capsules or tablets. Ask your pharmacist or check the patient information for a list of the ingredients.

  • You are taking amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone, in Aldactazide), or other medications containing triamterene. Your doctor will probably tell you not to take triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide if you are taking one of these medications.

  • You are taking other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. Be sure to mention any of the following: amphotericin B (Abelcet, Ambisome, Amphotec); angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as benazepril (Lotensin, in Lotrel), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec, Vaseretic), fosinopril, lisinopril (in Prinzide, in Zestoretic), moexipril (Univasc, in Uniretic), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril, in Accuretic), ramipril (Altace), and trandolapril (Mavik, in Tarka); anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); barbiturates such as phenobarbital; corticosteroids such as betamethasone (Celestone), budesonide (Entocort), cortisone (Cortone), dexamethasone (Decadron, Dexpak, Dexasone, others), fludrocortisone (Floriner), hydrocortisone (Cortef, Hydrocortone), methylprednisolone (Medrol, Meprolone, others), prednisolone (Prelone, others), prednisone (Rayos), and triamcinolone (Aristocort, Azmacort); corticotropin (ACTH, H.P., Acthar Gel); digoxin (Lanoxin); laxatives; lithium (Lithobid); medications for diabetes, gout, or high blood pressure; methenamine (Hiprex, Urex); narcotic pain relievers; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn); oral steroids such as dexamethasone , methylprednisolone (Medrol), and prednisone (Rayos); and potassium supplements or potassium-containing medication supplements. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

  • You have kidney disease or high blood levels of potassium. Your doctor may tell you not to take triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide.

  • You have or have ever had kidney stones, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, a chronic inflammatory condition), diabetes, gout, or thyroid, heart, or liver disease.

  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breastfeed if you are taking triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide. If you become pregnant while taking triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide, call your doctor.

  • You should know that triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. This is more common when you first start taking triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide. To avoid this problem, get out of bed slowly, resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing up. Alcohol can add to these side effects.
  • You are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide.

  • You will need to plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

You should store Dyazide in its original packaging, tightly closed. You should take special care to keep it away from children and pets. This medication should be stored at room temperature, away from any excess moisture or heat.
